Pony Express Park Chappell

Pony Express Park Chappell sits around a small lake just off Interstate 80, providing free overnight camping with basic amenities for travelers crossing Nebraska. This municipal park operates on an honor system, with campers following the simple rule to "leave it cleaner than you found it," as Richard R. learned from fellow visitors.

The campground allows drive-anywhere camping across its grounds, with no designated sites or hookups. A single unisex bathroom provides flush toilets and running water, while picnic shelters with grills dot the property. Campers can set up tents or park RVs of any size around the lake's perimeter. The sandy soil requires deep tent stakes due to Nebraska panhandle winds.

Cell service reaches the park reliably, making it workable for remote professionals. Train tracks and the interstate create background noise throughout stays. Dumpsters and garbage cans handle waste disposal. Dogs can explore the area but may encounter thistle plants. Landon C. found it "a perfect place for me to sleep at" during solo travel.

Recent visitors report a $15 overnight fee has replaced the free camping policy, with payment collected at an on-site stand. The park remains accessible year-round, though some facilities may close seasonally. Most campers use it for single-night stops while traveling cross-country. Local gas station staff confirm a three-night maximum stay.

For campers wanting full hookups, Creekside RV Park and Campground operates less than half a mile north with standard RV amenities.

A lakeside campground with flexible camping spots and basic facilities including flush toilets and picnic areas. Now charges $15/night after being free. Train and highway noise noted by some visitors.

Perfect for a quick overnight stop

Very nice public campground for $15. Not busy this time of year as we were the only rv campers there. Great place to walk dogs and picnic. Chappell is a great little town!

SiteThe entire park allows parking pretty much anywhere. we camped on the far side of the little lake

Nice but not free

Nice little campground easily accessible from I80. It's not free anymore, but only 15 dollars a night. There's restrooms and walking paths. Was perfect for a one night stay.

One of my favorite spots is no longer free

I stopped by after having discovered this free spot last year but they are now charging $15 a day, which is not worth it. I would have rather planned to drive farther into Wyoming to get one of the free spots. I understand why the town started charging a fee but it’s sad nonetheless.

Peaceful free spot right off the interstate

This is a great location off of I80 if you don’t need any amenities. I boondock often so this was a perfect place for me to sleep at. Cell signal was excellent and let me work remotely. It’s quiet and I’m pretty sure I was the only person there at night. There are bathrooms if you need it. Highly recommend if you need a beautiful free spot!

Great free spot

Awesome little spot on a lake. Distant train noise is a minor down side, all the thistle your dog will get into is bigger. Clerk at a nearby by Gas station said "you can stay there free for up to three nights."

Free and Easy

Lovely little spot surrounding a lake. There are no designated sites. You can pretty much drive and camp wherever. There are a few picnic areas with structures. Had one unisex bathroom with flush toilets and running water. Dumpsters and garbage cans. Only complaint is it's between a railway and a highway so it gets a little noisy. Besides that great place to stay for a night on the way out west.

Nice tent camping

This campground is free it has a lake it has a few picnic shelters with grills. There is one bathroom with a flush toilet it’s coed. You can drive just about anywhere on the property and set your tent up. There are no electric hook ups or water hook ups available. But for an overnight stop or two it’s a pretty nice place

Not open 11/20

We stopped here but it doesn’t look like the park is open. Bathrooms were all closed and big mounds of dirt blocked most of the roads. Bummer.

Beautiful Prairie site with easy access to 80

Pulling off I 80 we saw RVs park around a pretty lake in a nice park. We drove over and asked someone in an RV if there was an honor box or if somebody would come collect a fee. He said “no the rule is just leave it cleaner than you found it.”

Be sure to drive your tent stakes deep in the sandy soil as the wind can blow pretty hard in the Nebraska panhandle at times.
