Worth every mile

Approximately 8 miles from the Holland Lake trailhead is the Upper Holland Lake Campround. Considered a backcountry campsite there is very (and I mean very) little traffic through this breathtaking spot. And for good reason. The hike up is strenuous to say the least. The campground itself is nearly perfect. A large meadow peppered with trees skirting the north shore of Upper Holland there's ample space for multiple campers, though there were no others while we were there. This space has been frequented by forest service workers so there are tie ups for horses and even an outhouse of sorts. It's nothing more than a hole with a toilet on top tucked in a tiny A frame with no door but hey after a few days of peeing in the woods it's darn near luxurious. Fire rings are set up close to the lake leaving plenty of space between your tent and cooking space. Trees perfect for slinging up your grub are ample as well. There are several day hikes nearby and a small waterfall to filter water from. The lake itself is full of rainbow trout so don't forget your lightweight rod. The only thing that keeps this spot from being the best place we've pitched a tent are the bugs. At times you think they may very well just pick you up and fly you off to their queen. All in all we would absolutely come back for a few more nights of solitude in one of Montanas most beautiful far off spots.

How do I access Upper Holland Lake for camping in Montana?

Upper Holland Lake Campsites is a backcountry camping destination accessed via an approximately 8-mile hike from the Holland Lake trailhead. The trail is strenuous with significant elevation gain, making it a challenging trek that requires proper preparation. This remote location's difficulty to access contributes to its very light traffic and pristine wilderness setting. Be sure to bring appropriate backpacking gear, sufficient water, and food supplies. The effort required to reach this destination is rewarded with breathtaking scenery and solitude rarely found in more accessible camping areas.

Do I need reservations for Holland Lake Campground when visiting Upper Holland Lake?

Upper Holland Lake Campsites is a backcountry camping area that doesn't operate on a reservation system. Instead, sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. However, you may need a backcountry permit depending on the season. The main Holland Lake Campground (which is distinct from the Upper Holland Lake backcountry sites) might require reservations for those starting their hike from that location. Contact the Flathead National Forest office for current permit requirements and regulations before your trip.

What trails are available at Upper Holland Lake?

The primary trail to Upper Holland Lake is the challenging 8-mile path from Holland Lake trailhead, featuring significant elevation gain. From Upper Holland Lake itself, you can access connecting trails deeper into the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. The area serves as a gateway for further exploration into alpine terrain, with options for day hikes around the lake or extended backpacking routes. The trails offer stunning mountain views, wildflower meadows in season, and opportunities to observe wildlife in their natural habitat.

Are there cabin rentals available at Holland Lake near Upper Holland Lake?

There are no cabin rentals available at Upper Holland Lake itself, as it's a remote backcountry camping area only accessible by hiking. However, the Holland Lake area (near the trailhead) does have lodging options including Holland Lake Lodge, which offers cabins and accommodations before or after your backcountry adventure. These cabins provide a comfortable option for those wanting to stay in the area before embarking on the strenuous hike to Upper Holland Lake or upon return. Advance reservations for these facilities are strongly recommended, especially during peak summer months.
