Lakeview, near Flathead, Montana, is a charming spot for those seeking a peaceful camping experience by the Hungry Horse Reservoir. With a handful of sites that come equipped with picnic tables and fire pits, it’s perfect for enjoying evenings around the fire while soaking in the stunning views.

This location is known for its natural beauty, with easy access to the lake for some relaxing moments by the water. Great location

Only 4 spots i think. We stayed at the last one on the left of the entrance. Picnic tables. Metal firepit. With a trail down to the lake. We carried our paddle boards down and really enjoyed it. Beautiful views

Quiet camping in the reservoir

Beautiful campsite right by the hungry horse reservoir. Most sites have a fire pit. Large enough for tents and a rig. Sites have a picnic table as well. Lots of bugs though! Such a beautiful place to camp.

Quiet but dusty

Only 5 sites here, three in one direction and two in the other from the entrance, with a pit toilet in the middle. It looks like all 5 sites have a trail to the lake (I was able to check out 3 of the sites), with site 2 and site 5 having the best lake access. Site 5 looks like it has the flattest area for a tent, but I had no problems in site 2. My site’s lake access made for a great place to watch the sun rise. Nice but small gravel parking pads (wouldn’t suggest bringing a trailer down here), with two of them being doubles. All sites had the usual picnic table and fire pit. Warning, it will be dusty here as the main gravel forest road is just up the hill.

The best place to camp

While somewhat hard to get to (roughly 20 miles on a winding gravel/dirt road following Hungry Horse Reservoir) this was one of my favorite spots to camp during the entirety of my cross country road trip. We had a large flat site to park the car with a short trail down to the water with stunning views. Roughly an hour and a half drive from Glacier National Park (most of which is due to the unpaved Forest Road to get here).

While specific photo resources aren't detailed here, the campground features approximately 4-5 sites with distinct characteristics worth noting. Sites typically include metal fire pits and picnic tables, with flat areas suitable for both tents and vehicles. Most sites have trails leading down to the lake, with sites 2 and 5 offering the best lake access. For current photos, check the Flathead National Forest official website or contact the ranger district directly for visual information before your trip.

Where is Lakeview Campground located in Flathead National Forest?

Lakeview Campground is located along Hungry Horse Reservoir in Montana's Flathead National Forest. The campground sits approximately 20 miles from the main road, accessible via a winding gravel/dirt road that follows the reservoir. This somewhat remote location offers stunning lakeside views and a more secluded camping experience compared to more accessible sites in the forest. While the drive in requires some patience, many visitors find the beautiful setting well worth the journey.

What dispersed camping options are available near Lakeview Campground?

Lakeview Campground itself is a small, established campground with only about 4-5 designated sites. For dispersed camping alternatives, the surrounding Hungry Horse Reservoir area offers numerous opportunities along forest roads. These areas typically allow free camping with minimal facilities. When selecting a dispersed site, ensure you follow Flathead National Forest regulations: camp at least 100 feet from water sources, use existing fire rings when available, and practice Leave No Trace principles. The reservoir shoreline has multiple access points that may accommodate dispersed camping, though specific sites aren't formally designated.
