Managed by Montana State Parks, Lucifer Lake Wilderness Backcountry sits in the Mission Mountains above St. Ignatius, reached via the Mission Falls Trailhead. The trail turns steep and unmaintained past the waterfall. Fishing draws most visitors, and short cross-country routes connect to neighboring high mountain lakes, including Turquoise Lake Backcountry Site to the east. Campers should note that a nonresident reservation conservation permit is required through fwp.mt.gov, and grizzly bear activity increases noticeably in late July and August during the moth hatch.
