Free and drive-in accessible, Little Joe Campground sits along a creek in Lolo National Forest outside De Borgia, Montana, reached via a short dirt road a couple miles from the highway. No reservation is needed. There are no fees, no potable water, and no garbage service, so campers need to pack out everything they bring in. Pets are not permitted.
The layout includes a handful of sites, with several arranged in a cul-de-sac configuration that works well for groups and two others that sit more apart from the rest. Sites right along the water have fire rings with grates and sturdy picnic tables. A vault toilet is on-site and has been noted as clean and stocked with toilet paper during recent visits. Cleanliness, however, has been inconsistent across seasons. Multiple reviewers have found the area in good shape, while others have arrived to find trash, shotgun shells, and signs of rowdy overnight use.
Wildlife is a real consideration here. One camper reported waking at 2 a.m. to a bear foraging on the opposite bank, close enough to prompt a move to the car for the night. Bear awareness and proper food storage are not optional at this site. Those looking at tent camping near Lolo National Forest will find this one among the more rustic, no-cost options in the corridor. Campers who want developed facilities and a more managed environment may prefer Campground St. Regis a few miles north.
