Little Joe Campground - Lolo National Forest

We stayed one night at Little Joe Campground in Lolo National Forest while traveling, and it was exactly what we were looking for—a peaceful place to rest before continuing our journey.

The campground is quiet, secluded, and sits alongside Little Joe Creek. Listening to the creek flowing by made for a relaxing evening and a great night’s sleep.

There are six campsites, each with its own fire pit. Some sites have metal fire rings, while others have fire pits surrounded by stacked rocks. The campground was clean and well maintained, and the pit toilet was also clean, which is always appreciated in a rustic campground.

If you’re looking for a simple, peaceful forest campground away from the crowds, Little Joe Campground is a great choice. Whether you’re stopping for a night on a long road trip like we did or planning to spend a few days enjoying the forest, it’s a quiet and relaxing place to camp.

Woke up at 2am to the sound of a bear foraging on the other side of the bank. It never came to the camp side of the water, but way too close for comfort for me- we left our tent and took the car to the other side to sleep for a few hours and came back later. We had the site at the end of the culdesac so the first tent closest to where the bear was. It’s clean as of mid July 2025, no trash around, and pretty with the water, but I wouldn’t camp here unless you’re bear savvy and prepared.

Not far from town but well hidden. Nice creek but REDNECK TRASHED. Tons of trash, shotgun shells, etc. I couldn’t pack all of it out. Pretty spot just trash.

We saw two nice campsites along this dirt road that was only a couple miles from the highway. They must have cleaned it up recently because there wasn’t trash and the bathrooms were nice and clean and had TP. Just a pit toilet. Also fire rings with grates, and nice sturdy picnic tables. Minimal road traffic. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay!

We were greatly disappointed to find this campground full of trash, dog poo, and beer cans. Rowdy parties and gunshots all through the night really made it the wild west experience we could have skipped. It is a lovely spot so when it gets developed and maintained I would give it another try.

Sites Right along the river. A few sites are in a cul de sac style and would be great for group camping. The other two are fairly secluded. No water. No garbage. There is a Vaulted toilet. Each site has fire ring and a picnic table.
