    Good

Many campers have enjoyed the swimming beach and the nearby boat launch, making it easy to get out on the water. Solar  As one happy camper noted,“The beach area for swimming in Lake Independence is nice with a pavilion, volleyball, and ping pong nearby.”

    Well Kept Campground

This reservation only campground was well kept and close to amenities in Gwinn like their city park and diners. The full hookup sites were well marked but not a lot of shade and septic hook up was far back. There is a dump site on premise so we utilized that. Tent sites are well shaded and secluded from each other. Tenants were amazing and hiking trails were beautiful. The weather was too cold to swim but the beach area would be nice with warmer weather.

    Nice Park

Older well established state park. Has high usage in summer. Being older, many lots in modern area are close together. Decent restroom/shower building. Poor wifi reception.

Beautiful spot right on Lake Superior

Stayed on a Wednesday and there was space available but booked solid for weekends. Filled up by 4 pm. Spots are small, side-by-side and no privacy, but they have several spots to watch spectacular sunsets. That was worth the stay.

    Great for an overnight

This is a small campground, with sites that are somewhat close together. However, there’s a great view of Lake Superior, and the sunset from our site was wonderful. (Site 7) Nice and quiet too. We’d return if we’re in the area again.

    Loud

We came in on a Saturday afternoon campground only 2 sites left. Very loud, generators running constantly. 2 groups playing very loud music. One group did karaoke for 6 hours. Visitors parked at the last vacant site making others think it was full. No garbage receptacles. Dirty bathroom.
No good access to lake for swimming.
    I do not recommend

    Small and Charming

We enjoyed our stay at Tourist Park in Gwinn. I loved that it was a small park with mostly RVs and a few camping spots. We have an Aliner and most of the RVs were big with their own bathroom, so the facilities at Tourist were almost all ours! Full hook-ups, bathrooms with showers, basketball court, fishing, Escanaba River, and hiking trails all right at the park. Close to Marquette, Presque Isle, and many more beautiful spots. My dog was allowed and they had a leash hook outside the bathroom and dog bag station. We would definitely go back.

    Great for Tents

Good campground for tenting. Our no electric tent site was right on the water which was great for a quick cool off in the hot weather. Bathrooms were clean. Full hook up sites looked to be pretty uneven so be sure to bring options to help with leveling.

Easy access from town and close to post office, library, stores 1 mile away, hiking trails, trout stream, golf course 6 miles, swimming in river, 15 other lakes in a 10 mile radius. Showers, sewage dump, fire pits. 21 miles from major regional city with all services.

Recent logging removed some of the charm

This area is being logged so many trees are gone. This makes it less pleasant now but that will change over time. Once we saw this we left and looked for another spot.

The campground is small but some space is between sites. Several are close together - perfect if you need a group type spot. Vault toilet and water hand pump are available. Go all the way to the boat launch and you can find a beach. Some campers found campsites here too.

This is a bit of a drive from the main road so maybe reflect on the logging before heading over. Don’t get us wrong though, the area is still quite beautiful.

    Keyes Lake Campground

    Great time

We found this place by mistake when the campground we were going to gave away our spot. It is very clean in the campgrounds and the site we had was privet and large enough for our 5th wheel and truck and boat. The bathroom was also spotless. The showers were free to campers with plenty of hot water. Keyes lake was right across the street and the fishing was great. Most certainly will return.

    Nice lake/noisy

This is a pretty decent campground typical rustic amenities. The sites are decent size there are some pull through sites for RV's. The lake is very nice, clear water. The biggest complaint I have is it is noisy. There is a significant amount of rd noise and sometimes trains go by blasting the horn at the intersection. There are definitely quieter more secluded campgrounds in the UP but it is fine for a quick overnighter in my opinion.

Nice camp site to stay at with great view of the bay. We drove to Houghton and took a hike. Restroom and showers not close however. The dump station was so easy since small campground. Very good price.

    Fun lake exploring!

Vibe: Mix of retirees and families.

    Cleanliness: Above average.

    Facilities: Average.

General spots: Varies from right up next to each other to odd shaped spaces that have extra room and trees.

Our site: 40. One of the odd shaped spaces that had extra buffer room and big trees for shade. It was at an intersection at the camp and traffic was pretty steady during the day.

Noise: Mostly quiet. Kids played well after dark in a parking lot across from us, but quiet hours didn’t start until 11 and they were never a problem.

Cell signal(Verizon): Full bars. I streamed a movie (Anatomy of a Murder...see below).

Other: You can swim at Independence Lake right at the camp. If you want to swim in Lake Superior, Squaw Beach is about 10 minutes away. Ate the Lumberjack Tavern and found out about“Anatomy of a Murder” and that it took place at the tavern. Turns out the couple involved had a trailer at the campground.

A nice beach park, great views.

We stayed in our tents at this site. The sites are reasonably sized and well described on the county website, even details about how level each site is. There seem to be sites available for all sizes. Showers are great ($.25 for 6 minutes) and bathrooms are really clean. Great park for kids, boating (kayaking, etc). Laundry facility is outside the camp (private) but worth noting.

Close to Lake Superior, just off of the Circle Tour. Marquette is within 30 min.

Views of Lake Independence from nearly each site and beautiful sunrises.

    Great spot,

Beautiful lake, great swimming area, secure, full hook ups. Very helpful we came in late night- they left reservation info in the mail box for us. They have wrist band identification system and they do enforce it. There were several Large floating climbing structures in the swim area. Kids were having a blast. Great sandy beach with resort style lounge chairs. Large grassy area adjacent to the beach. Kayak and paddle boat rentals right on site. This place is pretty cool. Nice low key place -great for families.

    Craig Lake State Park Campground

    Heaven

So amazing - I almost want to give this campground one star and discourage people because it is so amazing, and I'm selfish. For someone who GREATLY values hidden gems where you can get really out and remote, this place is a an absolute heavenly oasis.

Access is from 41 turn on the gravel road outside Michigamme coming from the East. Do not recommend coming or going from the access road on the west, can't remember the town/landmark...starts with an N - it's a VERY bumpy road, and my cockiness convinced myself I could do it in my truck, but didn't get very far before I gave in and had to back up aways to be able to turn around. Big boulders in road/trail.

    What to expect:

    • Park and walk/hike/canoe/kayak in. No motors on lake.
    • First few sites near the boat launch are about 1/4 Mile Walk in and are close to each other. I stayed at Site 8 which is the next accessible site by trail. Follow North Country Trail and turn left at "Sandy Beach Sites" side trail to access the other hike in spots. Beautiful site, small, fire pit, tiny launch spot, so you can get there by boat from the launch. Next site was quite a ways further down. Was there for two nights and no one camped at the sites near me.
    • Most sites are accessible ONLY by boat. Beautiful quiet lake. Some cabins available to rent. Guessing you need to reserve online.
    • Here in late July and lake was quite warm, not sure I'd trust it to be swimmers itch free. I suspect it's a shallow lake. Lots of fish from what I hear.
    • Late July, some mosquitoes. Had my thermacell running and it wasn't bad. I was able to relax in my hammock for a while without any bug spray or the ThermaCELL and was just fine.

North Country Trail skirts the lake and there are additional trails that branch on and off it, including trails that go all the way around.

    Beautiful, peaceful, place.

    Perkins Park & Campground

    Family friendly and crowded

Overall, this is a good option for coming near Marquette, especially if you have a trailer, a family, or are looking to post up for a bit.

Pros: The campsite has a lot of amenities that are easily accessible. Each site has a table, a fire pit, potable water nearby and most have electric hookup. The beach area for swimming in Lake Independence is nice with a pavilion, volleyball, and ping pong nearby. You can launch your boat or fish from the dock. The views are beautiful.

Cons: It's a crowded location that doesn't offer a lot of privacy. At 2am we were woken up by a boat coming back in from the water blasting it's music while the whole crew was loud and obnoxious.

    Laughing Whitefish Campground

Looking for a small basic quiet camp - this is for you

4 spots with fire rings and tables. One larger spot with nothing.

You can drive to the sites, but not much room for a car and camping gear. Camper trucks, vans and RTTs would work.

    No cell signal.

Couple of miles off main road and no cell service. Not marked with camp signage until you get there.

Road is washboard but not difficult.

    Port a potty.

Lake, boat ramp and hiking trails close by.

    Looks very lightly used.
