Surrounded by forest in the Calcasieu Ranger District, Hunters Camp sits just off a range road within Kisatchie National Forest and draws its heaviest use during hunting season. It's free. The two-loop layout provides dispersed tent sites, a composting vault toilet, and trash service, but no water, so campers need to pack their own. Insects run heavy in warmer months, mosquitoes and horseflies especially. Military activity is a factor here too, as Fort Polk borders the area and personnel occasionally pass through. A nearby non-motorized trail allows hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian use, while fishing requires driving further down range road to the Blue Hole complex. Logging has been reported in the surrounding area, so checking conditions before arrival is worth the effort. Those wanting hookups or more developed facilities can look at pet-friendly camping near Kisatchie National Forest or the nearby Fullerton Complex a short distance away.
Description
The Hunter Camp is a very primitive camping area in the middle of the forest. There is a camping loop area and a vault restroom facility and is centrally located near the Ouiska Chitto Trail. The Longleaf Scenic Area is also nearby with the Big Branch Trail running right next to the camp.
