East Shore Camping Area — Cheney State Park

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Fishing and hiking draw campers to East Shore Camping Area at Cheney State Park, where Cheney Reservoir sits directly accessible from several sites. The campground runs along the eastern side of the lake and includes multiple distinct areas: the Marina campground, which has 50-amp electric hookups, and the Lakeside campground, which provides 30-amp service. Both have water spigots insulated for winter use, making this one of the few spots in the region that stays functional year-round. A dump station is on-site as well.

Navigation within the park takes some patience. Reviewers note that signage for available sites is unclear, particularly in the off-season, and some campers have ended up driving through every site to find the right one. The access roads have a reputation for being rough. Cell service is workable for most visitors, with AT&T specifically mentioned as reliable. Campers looking at places to camp near Cheney will find the east shore configuration here different from the west side, which houses the park office and West Shore Camping Area.

Primitive sites sit right on the water. "Right on the water," notes papa T., who favors those spots over the hookup areas. Cleanliness has been inconsistent based on reviews, with one visitor reporting trash left by previous campers at non-lakeside sites. Pets are allowed, and reservations are available, though off-season self-pay can be confusing. Nightly rates run $10 to $23 depending on site type. Anglers, RV travelers needing full hookups, and anyone wanting direct lake access will find this campground worth considering.

Very hot but not the parks fault.

We stayed for two days. While the park is nice, with plenty of places to walk, it was just too hot.

Our service dogs couldn't go out for very long so they were stuck inside with both of our 15,000 ac units blasting away 24 hours a day.

We humans had a couple of walks passing the other three occupants of the campgrounds.

Plenty of water, trash receptacles, restrooms and electricity.

Would go there again on cooler occasions.

Our Att service worked very well.

I think this would be brutal in the summer

The sites at least online, seem to be first come in the off seasons. You can't reserve online which is a pain. Seems to be a kansas thing. The lake is low and stinky. One other camper while I was here and pleasant day, 75 degrees with a mild wind, but trying to figure out how to pay is terrible. During winter, you can only self pay for one night or go into the office but that is on the west side of the lake.

Year round camping available

We stayed overnight with our trailer en route. There are specific sites available year round that have water and electric available. These are located in the Marina and Lakeside campgrounds on the East side. The water spigots are insulated. 50 amp available at Marina campground only. 30 amp at both. Being winter, it’s pretty sparse, dry, and windy. For an overnight, it was an affordable stay.

My only complaint is that the available sites aren’t clearly communicated. We drive to every site until we found the right one. Wish they would update that info for winter camping.

Dump stations available! Unfortunately not for human consumption (see pic) :D

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make reservations for camping at Cheney State Park in Kansas?

For Cheney State Park, reservations can be difficult to make online during off-seasons as the system appears to operate on a first-come, first-served basis during these periods. During peak season, online reservations may be available. If planning a visit, it's advisable to contact the park office directly for the most accurate reservation information. The reservation process can be somewhat challenging to navigate, so calling ahead is recommended to confirm availability and payment procedures.

Are there cabins available at Cheney State Park?

Specific information about cabins at Cheney State Park is limited in current sources. The park primarily offers camping sites rather than cabin accommodations. For the most accurate and up-to-date information about any potential cabin offerings, contact the Cheney State Park office directly before planning your trip.

What RV facilities are available at Cheney Reservoir?

Cheney State Park offers year-round RV facilities in the Marina and Lakeside campgrounds on the East side. The Marina campground provides 50-amp electrical hookups, while Lakeside has 30-amp service. Water connections are available and winterized with insulated spigots. The park features over 570 sites in total, with many offering generous spacing. Some electric sites even have WiFi access that performs well. For primitive camping, there are areas right along the water that some campers prefer.

What recreational activities can visitors enjoy at Cheney Lake?

Cheney Lake offers numerous recreational opportunities for visitors. The park features extensive walking paths throughout the grounds, making it ideal for hiking and nature observation. Water activities are central to the experience, with swimming areas (though beach cleanliness can vary). Many campsites are positioned right on the water, particularly in the primitive camping areas, allowing for easy water access. The lake itself supports various water sports and fishing, though water levels may fluctuate seasonally.

What do visitor reviews say about Cheney State Park?

Cheney State Park receives mixed feedback from visitors. The park is spacious with over 570 sites and many campers appreciate the large sites, especially those located right on the water in the primitive camping area. The park has undergone renovations to improve facilities. Each camping area has a dedicated camp host, which helps with management. However, some visitors note issues with cleanliness at both campsites and the beach area. The summer heat can be challenging, though the park's natural setting and walking opportunities are frequently mentioned positives. WiFi service is surprisingly good at electrical sites.
