Rock Creek County Marina and Campground

Neat county Park and campground in Mississippi River backwaters

This campground offers lots of amenities, including: gravel, pads, fire rings, firewood, on site, campground host, playgrounds, water, dump station, both tent and RV sites, as well as cabins. There’s a store for Supplies, and a grill serving food. The Eco tourism center includes interactive and educational displays and programs. The marina offers slips for rent, boat rentals of canoes and kayaks. The campground can get very buggy, considering seasons in Iowa.

      Geneseo Campground

      Small, Quiet and Clean

It’s small, quiet and clean. Booked on-line easily. Planned just for 2 days traveling cross country. Got a pull thru site, didn’t know the direction to pull in as their map didn’t show any arrows. Site is gravel, dirt and grass. Quite level and no blocks needed. Hook ups are situated properly for easy connection. Noted about 10 long term sites in use. Did not use any campground shower or toilet facilities. Follow directions given by campsite to avoid low railroad bridge. Followed their blue camping signs coming from i80 just fine. Geneseo is a nice small farm town with good supplies, gas , laundry. I would stay again if needed.

      Wilderness Campground, Scott County Park

The Most Peaceful Campground in Scott County Park

If you're the kind of camper who measures a campground by the number of trees instead of the number of amenities, Wilderness CG continues to be THE hidden campground gem within Scott County Park. Surrounded by mature hardwood forest, generous-sized campsites with decent privacy and miles of interconnected hiking trails, this campground delivers a camping experience that feels far more secluded than you'd expect to find just minutes from the Quad Cities. While my original review from just over a year ago goes into considerable detail about each aspect of the campground and the park itself, I thought I'd follow up that review with a quick summary of what continues to stand out most.

Here's a topline of HIGHLIGHTS and LOWLIGHTS along with a smattering of new photos.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Easily the most wooded, private and peaceful campground within Scott County Park, making it an outstanding choice for tent campers, in particular, and anyone seeking a true forest setting; (2) Spacious campsites tucked beneath a dense tree canopy (expert tip: be sure to look up at any potential 'widow makers' before setting up camp) that provides excellent shade, natural privacy and a genuine 'away from it all' atmosphere; (3) Immaculately maintained restroom and shower facilities with dependable hot water that rival many commercial campgrounds; (4) Outstanding access to some of the park's best hiking trails, allowing campers to step directly from their campsite into miles of beautiful woodland; and (5) Scott County Park itself offers an impressive collection of amenities, including: 2 fishing lakes (and 2 smaller ponds), a championship 9-hole golf course, massive family-friendly swimming pool, various scattered playgrounds, an abundance of picnic areas in and outside of excellent shelters and friendly park staff ... all just a short drive from your campsite.

LOWLIGHTS: (1) The heavily wooded terrain means some sites are uneven with exposed roots, making leveling RVs and 5th wheelers more challenging than at neighboring campgrounds; (2) There is no lake or waterfront access directly within Wilderness Campground, so paddlers and anglers will need to drive to other areas of the park; (3) The abundance of trees and leaf cover can make portions of the campground appear a little less manicured, even though it is very well maintained - when we were there in the Autumn, we wished we would have brought our rake!; (4) Only one of the campground's restroom buildings includes shower facilities, so some campers may have a short walk or drive depending on their site; and (5) Larger RVs may find neighboring campgrounds such as Bald Eagle or Woodside better suited to their size and setup.

      Happy Camping!

      Blanding Landing

      Pretty but very uneven

The campground is very nice but most of the sites are not level. I’m not talking about just put down the leveling blocks, they’re like backing into a ditch. Thankfully I’m staying when it’s not busy but I had to circle the campground three times to find a site I could make work and call reservation.gov to change my reservation. It’s a shame because it is a very scenic location and the camp hosts have been superb.

      Cedar River Campground

      Owners are credit card thieves

I would give it a zero if I could. Uneven pads for camper, right next to interstate and loud, neighbors so close it is unreal. Do not believe the pictures online posted those are campsites for permanent seasonal campers in the back. I was told the cost was $650 a month then charged $718 on my card. Campers are placed tongue to the back of your neighbor in front of you camper. so if one wants to move out you have to pack up your camper and move yours to a temporary spot for a couple of days so they can get out then pack up your camper again and move it again. They broke the contract doing that with us so instead of signing a new contract on a new spot we went ahead and went to another campground. Owner (which you never see, never picks up phone or has an office you can go to) continually tries to charge my credit card a large sum of money because she is mad. Update three weeks later still trying to charge my credit card various amounts. We didn’t even complete the whole month we paid for and did not ask for a refund for the days not stayed so technically they owe us money. Also you are not allowed to have any mail sent to you if renting monthly' and there was a lot of trash and illicit drug use going on in the campground.

      Little Bear Campground

      Perfect for a quick stop

If you’re looking for a quick stop on your travels with full hookup and a bonus pool this is perfect! The host is very friendly and accommodating. Easy on and off of I80. There is not a lot of shade but if you have AC and an awning, you will be just fine

      Hickory Grove Campground

      Really nice spot

Even in this incredible heat ( high 90's) the woodsy campground feels pleasant. Birds tweeting, lots of space between sites. The zero entry swimming pool is new and spotlessly clean, as are the showers. The owners are friendly and helpful. I highly recommend.

      Prophetstown State Park Campground

      On the river

Nice campground with grassy sites right on the rock river. Small town nearby with access to all amenities. While there are designated sites, there are no actual camping pads. Camping is on the grass. It was quite damp when I visited.

Very nice campground! Staff and campers alike were friendly, and the air conditioned cabin was perfect with the very humid night.

    Guide to Bettendorf

The Mississippi River region near Bettendorf maintains warm temperatures from May through September, averaging 82°F in summer months. Winter camping remains viable with proper gear, as temperatures rarely drop below 15°F in January. Campgrounds span both banks of the Mississippi, with several locations offering year-round access despite seasonal fluctuations in river levels.

    What to do

Fishing access points: Rock Creek County Marina and Campground provides extensive backwaters for anglers seeking diverse catches. "This campground has an assortment of primitive and electrical sites. They also have cabins and canoe/kayak rental, a visitor shop with food/drink and a mini museum of the local wildlife," notes a visitor, highlighting the educational component of the fishing experience.

Paddling opportunities: Geneseo Campground offers direct access to the Hennepin Canal for kayaking and canoeing. A camper shares, "Great place to camp! Right on the Hennepin Canal. RV, tent, Cabins, and Yurt camping. The couple that run this campsite are so sweet! Pedal bikes for kids (and grown ups), a spray ground, and more!"

Historical explorations: Beyond the Pioneer Village mentioned in other sources, visitors can explore local history through additional sites. "Should you be looking to marinate in some good US history, then you are in luck as there is a museum near here to little known/revered President Herbert Hoover that has a bunch of exhibits," suggests one traveler staying at Little Bear Campground.

    What campers like

Clean facilities: Morrison-Rockwood State Park consistently receives praise for maintenance standards. One camper enthusiastically reported, "The (and I cannot emphasize this enough) CLEANEST campground bathrooms I've ever seen! I'm not squeamish and have been camping for years so my expectations for campground bathroom cleanliness is well calibrated but these bathrooms were amazingly clean!"

Kid-friendly amenities: Cedar River Campground offers structured activities for families. A reviewer mentioned, "Recently under new ownership, you can tell they've been working hard getting the place going again. They had a great fireworks display for the fourth. Spots are tighter than what we prefer, but will be back again."

Variety of accommodations: Camp Liberty provides options beyond those mentioned at other glamping sites near Bettendorf. "Camp offers site for all tastes: primitive and modern cabins and lodges, tents for small or large groups and couples. Hard roads, fire pits, tables, water, showers, supplies. Surrounded by nature with forest, prairie, and lake," explains a recent visitor.

    What you should know

Site selection importance: Many campgrounds have varied site layouts that affect privacy. At Wilderness Campground, Scott County Park, a camper advises: "The surroundings here are thick and lush, providing you with a real authentic experience in nature and offers real amazing solitude, peace & quiet as well as substantial privacy, where you and your camping exploits won't be on full display."

Seasonal considerations: Most glamping accommodations close to Bettendorf, Iowa have limited winter availability. Scott County Park visitor notes, "Scott County Park is easy to fall in love with, whether traveling solo or with a family as there is a lot that this park offers up: from fresh water catch & release lakes, combination of topographies, from woodlands, wetlands and prairie grasslands."

Booking requirements: Weekend availability becomes limited during summer months. For glamping close to Bettendorf, reservations should be made 2-3 months in advance. Little Bear Campground operates differently: "No reservation needed. We came in after hours and owner greeted us and made sure we got settled."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground proximity: When glamping with children near Bettendorf, consider site selection carefully. At Morrison-Rockwood State Park, "The exceptions would be sites 55-64 that loop around the playground... For that same loop, since it circles the playground, if kids playing noises bother you, might want to choose a different site."

Educational opportunities: Rock Creek County Marina and Campground offers nature-based learning. "Neat County Backwaters CG & Marina... includes camping cabins, tent and RV sites, RR/showers, playground, dump and water stations, Eco Tourism store/grill, paddling rentals, Blue Heron Cruises, nature center," shares a visitor, highlighting the diverse educational options.

Activity planning: Families should prioritize locations with multiple on-site options. "Gorgeous surrounding, something for everyone. No strict rules. Environmental center for kids and adults alike and a cafe," mentions one reviewer about Rock Creek County Marina, emphasizing its versatility for family glamping trips.

    Tips from RVers

Solar power options: Woodside Campground offers sustainable amenities not commonly highlighted. A camper notes, "Nice, newer campground with solar power! Campground offers host, nicely maintained heated showers and restrooms, play area, firewood, available on site, RV pads are hard surface, have fire rings, water, electric, tables."

Site leveling challenges: RV travelers should prepare for uneven terrain at certain locations. "The pad was uneven but we got our pup leveled out. We couldn't hike as much due to some hunting still going on but we made due," shares a visitor to Morrison-Rockwood State Park, providing practical insight for rig setup.

Overnight convenience: Some campgrounds specifically cater to travelers passing through. Little Bear Campground gets praise for accessibility: "Very conveniently located off I-80, Fair price, full hook up and pull through site $33.00," making it ideal for RVers needing quick overnight glamping accommodations near Bettendorf.
