Mounds State Recreation Area Campground — Brookville Lake

This is a nice little campground. There is a lot of space between campers, and the spots are asphalt and somewhat level. It didn’t feel crowded at all. There are plenty of good hiking trails around and it’s fun to go look at the dam. Highly recommend going to the overlook at sunset!

      East Fork State Park Campground

A large campground spread out over multiple loops. Roads and campsites are paved. Our site #416 was spacious and secluded at the end of a dead end road. The bathhouse was a short hike away and in good condition.

      Elkhorn Creek RV Park

      Great family campsite

It was really easy to get checked in and set up. They have some amazing amenities to keep the kids entertained. It is right outside of Frankfurt so you are nice and close to many different attractions.

      Deer Haven

      Rough Access

We made reservations to stay here for 3 nights and missed the first night due to damaging weather nearby, (tornadoes in Cincinnati.) On day two when we arrived we found the access driveway to be deeply creviced from washout conditions. We straddled the crevices on the uphill drive but we were unable to make the 90° narrow access to the site, spinning out in the wet grass on multiple tries.

The only option for exit is to back down the driveway, which in our MB Cruiser (8,000+ lbs) was challenging.

The host is extremely communicative and a pleasure to chat with pre-arrival and completely understanding of our dilemma. We chose not to stay the remaining nights.

Had the weather been favorable, access may have been much easier and is definitely passable for car, truck or small van camping. If your turning radius is long, reserve site #1 which may have been passable for us but we did not attempt because that is not what we had reserved, but the host later offered to us. Site #1 is the lower grassy flat with much wider access.

Check with host about condition of driveway and entry before reserving.

Hamilton County Miami Whitewater Forest Campground

      Clean, quiet woods and raccoons

20 & 30 amp service only. Very nice place to kick back and unwind. Dump station is on a hill so it’s tough to get the job done completely.

    Guide to Patriot

Tent camping near Patriot, Indiana offers options within a 30-mile radius across southeastern Indiana and northern Kentucky. The area sits at approximately 500 feet above sea level with seasonal humidity affecting camping comfort. Most campgrounds remain open from spring through fall, with summer temperatures typically reaching 85-90°F and occasional thunderstorms requiring weather-ready gear.

    What to do

Hiking access: At Quakertown State Rec Area, trails connect directly to campsites. "Very nice place to stay and spend the weekend relaxing," notes camper Kimberly A.

Waterfront activities: Morgan's Outdoor Adventures provides immediate river access. According to Lerin P., "Steps away from gorgeous river views," making it ideal for kayaking, swimming, and fishing during warmer months.

Wildlife spotting: Dawn and dusk offer the best opportunities to observe local wildlife. Bring binoculars to identify native bird species and watch for deer that frequent the wooded areas around camp boundaries.

    What campers like

Riverside mornings: The waterfront tent sites at Morgan's Outdoor Adventures provide distinctive camping experiences. "We loved the views of Morgan's. There is nothing like waking up and making breakfast while watching the river roll by!" reports camper Lerin P.

Privacy levels: Most campgrounds provide moderate seclusion between sites, though some offer more isolation than others. At Birdsell Castle, the 10 tent sites are spread across the property, providing better spacing than more crowded options.

Basic amenities: Most tent camping locations provide essential facilities without excess development. Fire rings are standard at most sites, and bathroom facilities vary by location.

    What you should know

Closed locations: Several listed campgrounds in databases aren't actual camping locations. At Boltz Lake Ramp, camper Noreen warns: "There's only a boat ramp here! No camping at all... definitely good for a 'put in' but that absolutely it."

Site spacing: Some campgrounds feature tightly packed sites. At Morgan's Outdoor Adventures, despite the excellent waterfront location, camper Lerin P. notes that "Sites are tight, but if you love waterfront this is great."

Noise considerations: Research potential noise sources before booking. Some campgrounds have unexpected noise factors like nearby shooting ranges or high-traffic areas that can affect the wilderness experience.

    Tips for camping with families

Safety precautions: When tent camping with children near Patriot, bring extra lighting for nighttime bathroom trips and mark paths clearly. Most campgrounds have uneven terrain requiring careful navigation after dark.

Activity planning: Pack games and activities suitable for the specific campground amenities. Tree Line Retreat offers drinking water access and allows campfires, making it suitable for s'mores and campfire stories without hauling extra water.

Weather preparation: Summer camping requires heat management strategies. Pack cooling towels and portable fans for tent ventilation, as humidity levels regularly exceed 80% during summer months.

    Tips from RVers

Limited options: True tent-only campers face fewer restrictions than RVers near Patriot. Many primitive camping areas exclude large vehicles but welcome tent setups.

Combo facilities: At Paramounts Kings Camp Ground, tent campers can access RV amenities including water hookups and sewer connections. However, verify current status before planning a trip as camper Sonya M. reports: "The park is closed and should no longer be listed on the app."

Alternative options: When established campgrounds are full, contact local landowners about permission-based camping on private property. Some farmers allow tent camping for nominal fees during non-hunting seasons.
