      Millpoint Park

      Riverfront Refuge

This lush, shade-rich, pet-friendly CG sits completely surrounded by the oft overlooked Spring Bay Fen Nature Reserve, creating the rare sensation of being deep in nature while still only a short drive from Peoria. A looping, shade-covered gravel lane guides you past roughly 80 generously spaced sites, each perched beneath tall hardwoods, before opening to the sought-after waterfront slots that frame spectacular sunset views across the water. Whether you’re casting a line, slipping a kayak off the boat ramp or simply leaning back in a camp chair during Golden Hour, this is a campground that practically forces you to exhale. As my review from a year and a half ago provided substantial detail, here I'm just going to point out the HIGHS and LOWS while adding some additional fotos of the CG.

HIGHLIGHTS: (1) Spacious, well-shaded sites that are far roomier than most RV parks in central IL; (2) Excellent mix of back-in and pull-thru sites with water, electric and sewer hookups; (3) Direct access to Upper Peoria Lake with a strong boat launch for anglers, paddlers and sunset chasers; (4) Two additional ponds on property for simple shoreline fishing - perfect for the kiddos; (5) Exceptionally clean restroom and bathhouse facility near the entrance; (6) Three rentable cabins for non-RV travelers; (7) Easy hiking options north and south of the property, including the small beach area at Funks Run; (8) Friendly ownership with a real character where the owner, Don, is known for going above and beyond for campers; (9) Reliable shade almost everywhere, keeping summer stays comfortable.

LOWLIGHTS: (1) The well water contains noticeable iron, which MIGHT be fine for showers but not recommended for drinking; (2) Mosquitos, gnats and ticks are summer regulars here in central IL, so be sure to bring DEET and scented candles; (3) Supplies are limited on-site, so trips into town are necessary for groceries or extras, but the good news is that in less than 20 minutes south of here, you'll discover a Home Depot, Lowe's, Bass Pro Shop, Target, Walmart and Costco; (4) Primitive tent areas - which can be found in the open lot north of the property right on the river - exist but provide little separation or privacy compared to the RV loops; (5) This CG can fill up quickly on warm-weather weekends and the summer holidays, especially the waterfront stretch.

      Happy Camping!

      Nature’s Way RV Park

Quiet spot that was perfect for a getaway

Took my daughter for the weekend. Camp host were wonderful and even worked with us when I arrived later then planned. Full hookup was perfect and location was great.

Location is close to Utica so we were able to enjoy the local shops and restaurants.

Wonderful spot and we will definitely be back.

      Comlara County Park

Quiet and beautiful, but not the best bathrooms

$25 a night for 30 amp hookup is pretty good! The sites are clean and spacious. It’s quiet too! Pretty lake, but sites aren’t right on the lake.

The bathrooms need some work. Water had a boil order on it and showers only worked in the men’s room. Water was HOT! Which is great! However, the water smelled metallic…

      Pleasant Creek Campground

      Sufficient for a quick stopover

We added a day to our Starved Rock itinerary and couldn't get into Starved Rock State Park Campground that night, so quickly booked this from the road. Got into the Highlands, which was packed and super close quarters. Not what we love, but several sites looked like extended families/friends had booked together and they were having a blast, especially the kids. Looked like they had some activities available and we saw several kids with fishing poles heading somewhere fun. We didn't explore the rest of the grounds; perhaps other sections afforded more privacy. I thought it was a bit pricey for the amenities (one shower house very far away) and hemmed-in feel, but it served our purpose for one night.

      Millpoint Park

      Staff was Superior

We arrived as a storm was blowing in. Tornado watch, severe thunderstorms and torrential rains. Despite the in conditions, when learning it was our first night ever in an RV, our host went above and beyond to meet our needs. Although we reserved a 30 amp site, our site only had 50. She ventured out in the pouring rain to bring us an adapter. The next morning, our site had flooded and she rode out to our site to assess the situation. She was incredibly responsive by call and text. We were baptized by fire on our first night of RV life, but because of her, we made it!

      Pleasant Creek Campground

lives up to it's name, good option for Starved Rock area

Because of it's layout, you never get a true sense of how big the whole campground is (50 acres). The largest and most open area is on top of the hill (the Highlands) but there are other areas that are shadier and more close to nature (Alcove way, Creekside, Oak Grove, the Glades).
Depending on the time of year, the creek may not be running, but the fishing pond is always full. Many activities in well maintained areas. It's a new campground and the general store hasn't built up much inventory yet. The firewood is dry and burns well.

Fire pits are basic steel circles, bring your own grill.

There's one central restroom with showers, clean and spacious, but it can be a walk from some areas (long hills too).

There are small cabins for rent and long-term sites are available.

      Comlara County Park

      Beautiful, hidden gem

Beautiful, quiet, and clean park. I stopped for a quick overnight but will definitely be back to stay when I have more time. Sites could use more space as there is no privacy at all but that's the only thing that needs improvement.

    Guide to Secor

Illinois camping near Secor spans primarily flat terrain between 650-750 feet elevation with moderate precipitation averaging 38 inches annually. Located within the Grand Prairie region, the area features small waterways and prairie remnants across McLean, Woodford, and Tazewell counties. Seasonal temperatures range from mid-20s°F in winter to mid-80s°F in summer, creating distinct camping conditions throughout the year.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: Comlara County Park offers varied fishing experiences with both boat and shore options. "Large sites are nice, right by jones pond, but the fishing was not the best right by our site. Beautiful park but littered with bottle caps and cigarette butts," notes one visitor, highlighting mixed experiences at different fishing spots throughout the park.

Lake exploration: At Millpoint Park, visitors can enjoy direct water access to the Illinois River and Upper Peoria Lake. "We went fishing and kayaking. We caught some bluegill, buffalo, and large mouth bass," reports a reviewer, describing the accessible water activities available to campers.

Hiking trails: Several nature preserves surround the camping areas. One camper at Pleasant Creek Campground mentioned, "Close to the state parks where they have tons of amazing hiking," pointing to nearby recreational opportunities that complement the camping experience.

    What campers like

Spacious campsites: Many campgrounds offer generous sites that accommodate various camping styles. At Clinton Lake State Recreation Area, "The sites were spacious, and ours had a path to the lake. Filled with poison ivy, etc, so long pants recommended when walking thru," shares a visitor, noting both the benefits and practical considerations.

Waterfront views: Riverside camping provides scenic vistas, especially at sunset. "Perched on Upper Peoria Lake where the Illinois River conjoins, this family-friendly and pet-inviting lush camping outpost is completely surrounded by Spring Bay Fen Nature Reserve," describes a camper at Millpoint Park.

Budget-friendly options: The area offers cost-effective camping compared to more tourist-heavy regions. "We payed $28 a night for a full hook up," notes a visitor at Carl Spindler Campground, highlighting the value available for campers seeking affordable glamping alternatives near Secor.

    What you should know

Water quality issues: Some campgrounds have water challenges visitors should prepare for. "The water has a lot of iron in it, so don't attempt to drink it, but according to the locals, it's fine to shower in, so I would encourage you to bring a decent amount of bottled water with you," advises a Millpoint Park visitor.

Weather preparedness: The region experiences significant seasonal variations. At Kentuckiana Campground, a camper recommends, "If you haven't camped out here in central Illinois during the summer, you will want to bring good DEET spray to keep the ticks away as well as hard-core smoke or scent-fused candles."

Reservation challenges: Popular times fill quickly, particularly at state recreation areas. "Large campground that gets booked up most weekends. Holidays are crazy. I've heard people say you can sometimes get a nice, fairly secluded spot but I haven't had the patience to try," reports a Clinton Lake visitor.

    Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Several locations offer swimming areas with varying amenities. "They have a beach and a boat launch. The bathrooms are basic vault toilets but kept very clean," notes one Clinton Lake camper about recreational options for children.

Playground facilities: Family-friendly campgrounds include play areas. Condits Ranch received praise: "It's a nice place with a beach and playground for the kids. Seems pretty large. It was very quiet when we were there due to a somewhat rainy weekend. We still enjoyed ourselves."

Entertainment planning: Some campgrounds offer additional recreational amenities. At Nature's Way RV Park, "the 'crown jewel' asset here is the in-ground heated swimming pool, completely fenced in preventing the young kiddos from straying too far," explains a reviewer, noting family-safety considerations.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: RV campers recommend researching site layout before booking. "To get up to the sites, it's a one way up and down road. Hopefully no one else is coming the opposite direction," warns a Pleasant Creek visitor about navigation challenges with larger vehicles.

Hookup variations: Electrical options vary between campgrounds. Carl Spindler Campground offers "a mix of paved, full hook-up sites or electric only sites. Sites that are close to the river have a great view of the skyline at night and if you don't mind having just electric and being on sand these are great sites."

Seasonal considerations: Many RV sites have different seasonal availability. "We were on 2 huge pull-thru sites with just our 2 tents and we were the only tent campers I saw—maybe 1/3 of other sites had RVs. Some seemed to be permanent so not sure if that is common?" observes a Millpoint Park visitor about occupancy patterns.
