Fox Ridge State Park offers traditional camping options in a 2,000-acre forested setting in east-central Illinois. Located near Eastern Illinois University, the park features 43 Class A sites with electricity, showers, and vehicle access. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis during weekdays with weekend reservations available. Most sites are set back in shaded areas with varying levels of privacy between neighboring campsites.
What to do
Hiking through glacial terrain: Fox Ridge State Park provides unique hiking opportunities through terrain formed by glaciers. "The hiking trails are some of the best in the state because the glaciers dropped off mountains of soil in the area where this park is located. The surrounding farm land is flat as can be, but the forested hills and creek beds in the park are almost mountainous," notes Michael M. from Fox Ridge State Park Campground.
Fishing at Lake Shelbyville: Lithia Springs offers excellent fishing access on Lake Shelbyville. "Lithia Springs is a great campground with a wonderful marina located on beautiful Lake Shelbyville," shares a camper. The marina provides fishing equipment, bait, and boat rentals for day trips.
Explore local attractions: While camping near Charleston, take time to discover nearby points of interest. "There are plenty of trails in the park and things to do in the area. Be sure to check out the World's Fastest Soda Machine in Lerna, IL!" recommends Allen S. who stayed at Fox Ridge.
What campers like
Quiet natural setting: The peacefulness of the area stands out to many visitors. "Each site is isolated by trees and growth and the entire campground is shaded," explains Allen S. about Fox Ridge State Park. This creates a sense of seclusion even when the campground is busy.
Spacious campsites: Wolf Creek State Park Campground offers yurt camping near Charleston, Illinois with room to spread out. "Nice big spots. 30 and 50 amp available. Right on lake Shelbyville. 309 spots 141 are reservable," reports Sonya A.
Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention well-maintained amenities. "Great camp hosts and staff. I really recommend this campground for a real restful stop," shares Doug W. about his stay at Fox Ridge. The showers and restrooms at most area campgrounds are regularly cleaned and serviced.
What you should know
Limited amenities nearby: Be prepared to bring supplies with you when yurt camping around Charleston, Illinois. "Bring everything you need for the weekend with you, there are no businesses close to the park," advises Michael M. who stayed at Fox Ridge. Most campgrounds are at least 10-15 minutes from stores or restaurants.
Reservation requirements: Many campgrounds in the area fill quickly during peak season. At Forrest W. Bo Wood, "Reservation made on Recreation.gov. Sometimes available spots for one night. Can stay for two weeks in thirty day period," explains Debi.
Seasonal considerations: Some facilities have limited operations outside summer months. "The back loop was not available due to downed trees... You have to put your fee in the envelope provided when you enter the front loop," shares Fran S. about early spring camping at Fox Ridge when facilities were partially open.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly amenities: Robin Hood Woods Campground & Cottage Resort offers activities specifically for children. "Great campground for a chill entertaining weekend with kids. Beautiful new pool was perfectly maintained with plenty of tables and chairs to make a day of the time at the pool. Pavilion and picnic area near pool and playground perfect for family gatherings," notes Sarah S.
Beach access: Several campgrounds provide swimming opportunities. "There is a beach that closes after Labor Day, but there are lots of sites available all year round," explains Michael M. about Wolf Creek State Park. The beaches offer sandy shorelines and designated swimming areas during summer months.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Children enjoy spotting animals in their natural habitat. "There is tons of deer and other animals to watch and watch out that they don't steal your food while you are sleeping," warns Michael M. about Eagle Creek. Early mornings and evenings are best for wildlife sightings.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Casey KOA provides full-service sites for RVs. "This is a KOA Journey, it is right off the interstate in a nice little town in East Central Illinois. It has full hookup, and electric and water sites. The ground seems pretty level throughout the entire place so getting your rig setup should be fairly easy," reports Montt B.
Site leveling considerations: Many campgrounds in the region have varied terrain. "Level sites with growies between sites. Cell signal is off and on, but got us through," explains Gary P. about Fox Ridge State Park. Bringing leveling blocks is recommended for most area campgrounds.
Dump station locations: Most campgrounds provide sanitary disposal facilities, but locations vary. At Lone Point, visitors note the dump station is conveniently located near the entrance/exit. RVers should plan to fill water tanks upon arrival as some sites have shared water access points rather than individual hookups.
