Fishing, floating, and river access draw campers to Kootenai River Campground, a privately run site outside Troy, Montana, open from May 1 through October 15. A forested setting along the Kootenai River gives the campground its character, and a maintained path leads down to the water, where the owners have placed chairs and picnic tables at the river's edge. The highway runs nearby, which means some road noise is part of the experience, though that same proximity makes day trips straightforward.
About two-thirds of the sites have full hookups, accommodating RVs up to 65 feet with electric, water, and sewer connections. Tent sites are available but limited. Multiple reviewers note the grounds are consistently well-kept, the bathrooms clean, and the camp store stocked with basics. Campers with young children should know the tent area can feel close to neighboring sites, and at least one visitor found the noise factor a consideration after dark.
The owners come up repeatedly in reviews as a genuine asset. "Grounds are clean and tidy," notes Patrick B., who also points out the staff's willingness to point guests toward nearby attractions. Kootenai Falls, Ross Creek Cedars, and Libby Dam all come up as recommended day trips from multiple visitors. Campers wanting dispersed options in the same corridor can look at Kootenai NF Dispersed on the Yaak River near Yakt or Yaak River Campground to the northwest. This campground works well for RV travelers and families who want hookups, river access, and a base for exploring northwest Montana.
