Dorr Skeels Campground

Kootenai National Forest's Dorr Skeels Campground sits along a lake in northwestern Montana, open from Memorial Day through Labor Day and managed by the US Forest Service. Sites vary considerably: several cluster together on a hill near the parking lot, while four sit directly on the lake. Great over run lake and cg

We felt lucky to find a spot and stayed a week. The hostess seems unable to keep up and is overwhelmed. A review on Google maps reported a month ago her dog attacked another dog. Oh my. The toilets are nasty and take tp as it might be out. The lake was fun but we would have to wait till 8 or 9 pm to kayak because of the constant roar of motor boats music and screaming teens speeding up and down. It is surrounded by very large homes with docks. We did bike up to the red cedars. We had to portage our bikes over three large scree mud slides. The trees were stunning. The ross crk trail is gone. The amount of debris pushed by water was hard to to fully comprehend.

Beautiful, but stinky

The area was beautiful, plentiful fish, and peaceful. I’m not sure if it was because of the end of the season, but the restrooms were very smelly. I would go again, but it’s just a heads up about the stank!

Great little Lakeside Spot!

We only spent one night in this campground, but it was really lovely and I will definitely return for a longer stay. We were in site 5 with our pop-up trailer. The spot was level and had plenty of shade, a fire ring, and a picnic table. I think the best site in this CG a probably #4, which is at the end of the road on a hill right next to the lake. Most of the sites has food lockers, but site 5 didn't have one.

The bathrooms at this CG were clean and the camp host was friendly and attentive. There is access to potable water on the right side of the road as you enter the camping area. The lake is very nice. The kids and the pup really enjoyed swimming and paddleboarding here. The water was warm and clear and we had temperatures in the 80s during the day and probably in the high 50s overnight. Like I said, we liked this place a lot and I wish we had been able to spend more time here.

This CG isn't far from Troy, MT, which is very convenient if you need to run out to restock on groceries or whatever. That proximity to the road was the only minor downside. We could hear more road traffic than in some places. But the great things about this spot dar outweighed the one minor drawback.

Odd spots but great location

There are a handful of tent sites here. Several are on a hill next to each other beside the parking lot. 4 sites sit right along the lake. Great spot if camping near lake is your interest, however, lacks privacy as sites are directly beside each other. Awkward sites.
