Mālaekahana State Recreation Area encompasses this walk-in tent campground on Oahu's windward coast, managed by Hawaii State Parks & Recreation for $20 per night year-round. The gated property requires a keypad entry code and enforces strict hours—locked from 7 PM to 6 AM—which can complicate evening dining plans or early morning hikes.
Campers describe highly variable site conditions across different loops. Beach-front sites offer direct sand camping with minimal wind protection, while interior locations provide tree cover and shade for hammock setup. Stephanie Z. notes the campground "has access to so much" but warns weekend visits become "party central for the locals." Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit, though some areas experience significant crowding during peak periods.
The facility provides flush toilets, outdoor beach showers, and water spigots throughout the grounds for dish washing and teeth brushing. Multiple reviewers emphasize the cleanliness of restroom facilities. Beyond tent sites, the campground offers rustic cabins without electricity starting at $58 and larger cabins with power and private bathrooms around $120. A small camp store stocks ice, marshmallows, and basic supplies. Resident chickens roam freely—campers must secure all food items.
Access requires walking gear from parking areas to sites, with distances varying significantly by location. The property maintains nighttime security patrols via golf cart. Cell service reaches most areas, and alcohol is permitted on-site. Mosquitoes appear after dark, and roosters provide early morning wake-up calls. For expanded camping options in the region, consider campgrounds near Wahiawa.
Reserve in advance during winter months and weekends when local demand peaks highest.
