Oconee National Forest includes this small, free campground along the Oconee River, managed by the US Forest Service and open year-round to drive-in, walk-in, and boat-in visitors. The site count is low. Only five spots are available, and on a Saturday evening, three can fill by early evening, so arriving mid-afternoon gives the best chance at a site.
The campground sits beside a boat launch, making it a practical base for anglers and paddlers who want direct water access without hauling gear far from the vehicle. Recent improvements include new fire rings, lantern poles, and a picnic table at each site. Pit toilets are on-site, and Shari G. found them "decently clean and stocked" during her visit. Cell service has been reported as reliable here, which is worth noting for a free, primitive campground in a national forest.
Road access can be rough, so low-clearance vehicles may want to approach with caution, particularly after rain. The nearest resupply point is Athens, Georgia, roughly north of the campground, with grocery stores and restaurants. Campers who want to explore other options in the region can browse camping near Oconee National Forest or consider nearby Beechwood Farms if the five sites here are taken. Since no reservations are accepted, arriving early on weekends is the most reliable strategy.
