Sandy streets wind through Periwinkle Park, a privately run campground that holds a notable distinction: it is the only camping option on Sanibel Island. That scarcity shapes the experience here in practical ways. Sites fill quickly, prices run $50 to $62 per night, and the park operates with a cash-or-check-only policy that catches some visitors off guard. Campers looking at places to camp near Sanibel will find mainland alternatives at spots like San Carlos RV Resort & Marina or McGregor RV Park, but neither puts you on the island itself.
The campground functions partly as a mobile home community, which means camping sites sit close to permanent residents and to each other. Sites are gravel with concrete pads, and each includes a picnic table and grill. No campfires are permitted. The bathhouses draw consistent praise across reviews. Rob Y. called them "probably the cleanest I've ever seen at a campground," noting they were cleaned daily. Laundry facilities are also on-site, along with full hookups for rigs up to 80 feet, WiFi, and a dump station.
One section of the campground backs up to a sewage treatment facility, and when the wind shifts in that direction, the smell is noticeable. Worth asking about site placement when booking. The park also has an aviary and a pond, and campers with sites facing that side report shade from trees and good birdwatching, including parrots that occasionally appear at feeding time.
The beach is roughly half a mile away, walkable but more commonly done by bike. Sanibel's network of paved bicycle paths makes cycling the practical way to reach the beach, restaurants, and other island attractions. No pets are allowed, and the campground does not take tents in all areas, so tent campers should confirm availability when making reservations.
Lisette J. summed up what many reviewers echo: "Place is very clean and every one is so friendly." For anyone planning a week on Sanibel without the cost of a vacation rental, Periwinkle Park is worth booking well in advance.
