    Glenwood Canyon Resort

Near Perfection on the Colorado River

Wow! This is a beautiful spot. The lower campground is for tents and smaller RVs, but is definitely the spot to be if you can swing it! This campground has cabins, glamping tents, tent pads and spaces for RVs. We camped in spaces 17 and 18 in the lower campground right by the river. The “resorts has a rafting company, zip line, and restaurant/bar on premises.

    Pros:

    • Easy to access off of I-70, but you feel a million miles away
    • Gorgeous scenery all around
    • Very easy access to the bike/walk trail through Glenwood Canyon
    • 5 to 10 minute drive to Glenwood Springs attractions - Hot Springs, Gondola, downtown shopping a land restaurants

    Cons:

    • Spaces are EXTREMELY close together
    • The train runs by, which is very nice to see and experience as it runs through the canyon, but at 5 am, that sucker is LOUD
    • It’s a pricey campground, but could be worth it if you take advantage of all the amenities and it fits in your plans

Overall, this is a great campground. I might save it for a mid-week stay or slightly off season so you aren’t stacked on top of your neighbors.

    Glenwood Canyon Resort

    A splurge

After spending three nights in forest service campgrounds, we landed here, lucky to find a place with availability on a weekend in September (reservations made a month in advance). We opted for a riverfront RV site (#17) and we were right on the Colorado River, with the soothing white noise of the river putting us to sleep each night (interrupted only by the occasional LOUD train on the other side of the river).

This place has every kind of accommodation possible: (resort) cabins, cottages, glamping campsites, individual and group tent sites, and RV sites (some with full hook-ups, some with water and electric, some on the river, and some above it). The sites are laid out in typical RV park style, lined up like dominoes. This is not our typical preferred camping, but we were with friends, so we were able to create a little oasis between our sites.

The fire in August, Covid, and snow the first week of September essentially shut down all the extras this place has to offer– zip line, rock climbing wall, ropes course, and restaurant, so I cannot comment on these. But, Defiance Rafting is located on the property; while they were no longer able to offer rafting trips (due to potential rock slides resulting from fire damage), they did rent inflatable kayaks and we took advantage of this and had a rolling good time on the Colorado River!

The office staff is very nice and there is a small store in the office offering t-shirts, stickers, hats, etc. (but not food essentials). It is located about three miles from the town of Glenwood Springs and there is a trail leading from the resort that winds along the river to town. The trail east of the resort was still closed after the fire.

The bath/shower house was clean, but the shower set-up was funky in that there was no private area to undress/dress. The only other unpleasant thing was the odor emanating from what I would assume to be the waste/sewage facility and it was necessary to walk past it from the riverfront sites to the bathrooms. This and the price ($88 for a riverfront site) have me giving this place four stars instead of five, although I would consider staying here again if in the area.

    Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!

After a long, long day of driving, this was a true treat to pull into. As soon as we set up we ventured off to “duck island” after crossing their little bridge over the Colorado. It was truly refreshing to have trails, lots of beautiful landscaping and the Colorado river to relax with. There’sa nice pool, restrooms are clean, staff is delightful and spaces are large and inviting. Each has a fire and picnic table. Other than slight noise from the highway, this is definitely 5 star.

RV and Test Sites in Palisade

The location is good since it by the wineries and the Colorado river but the sites are all all jammed in together with no trees.  The bathrooms are really nice though.  The Van sites have almost no space to put out an awning.  The camp store is very limited and the hours are not good.

Falling asleep to the sound of the Colorado River literally 3 feet away is just wonderful, well worth the $54/night for a tent site. Great heated bathrooms, only a few minutes from town, no issues with noisy neighbors for us. Super great

Superb RV park in an ideal location

This RV park had a great shower/ bathroom and laundry facility. Our spot overlooked the Colorado River and had great scenic views. We had no issues with the hookups even though the temperatures were below freezing. It's mandatory to have a heated hose during the colder months. The Wi-Fi had a strong signal and we had very few issues with lagging.

Nicely Maintained KOA on Colorado River

We stayed at the Glenwood Springs West / Colorado River KOA in October 2020 for one night as we passed through the area. We were really pleased with this KOA, it was clean, quiet, well-maintained, and located in a nice area (not always the case with KOA's we've learned). The staff were friendly and the sites were all level and nicely spaced out. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Would highly recommend!

    Incredible Location

Loved the location. Right on the Colorado River. Bike path is right out the front. We rode it from Aspen down valley and right back to our campsite. A feature we really liked.

The sites were tight. Class A's take up most of it. The good thing is the row we were on had lots of room to maneuver in front of the site. The Laundry room was broke the 3 days we were there. So prepare for that. I would be back just because of the location.

Our site, 44 is also located off set and below the deck of the resort event center. (Weekend celebrations may offend some, not us) quite time is 10pm. We’ve enjoyed watching Rafters, Kayakers & Geese float & fly the turns of the River. Wonderful staff. Available if needed. Kevin, manager; generous & helpful. Twilla, the work & stay host att. Discounts on rafting while booked at GCR. 1.7m to downtown Glenwood, (foodies, cute shops) bike path, or… just hang by the river near the boat launch & tent sites. (Our fav. spots!) Pioneer Campground — Vega State Park

Nice cabin rentals in a Colorado State Park

The cabins are HA and have nice sidewalk paths from the parking lot. Inside a mini fridge, coffee maker, and a microwave are provided. There are 2 bunks in the back and a plastic kitchen table in the "living space." The cabins have nice patio furniture on the front porch, which was a nice touch for a State Park.  The outdoor picnic table and campfire area outside the cabin is large. The five cabins in this area are close together and you can view your neighbors but this was not a problem for us. (It would make for great a trip with extended family or friends.) One may consider the cabin pricey, but it was typical for a Colorado state park.

During our stay the bathrooms (vault toilets) near the cabins were so full of bees it was like Candyman was also staying the weekend. There are flush toilets and showers next to a small playground closer to the reservoir. A trail will take you from the cabins to the visitor center. While other areas of the park were not full during our stay, I imagine that at the peak of summer the boating and RVing is plenty.

    Highline Lake State Park Campground

    Pretty nice place to be

This is a small campground on the Western Slope of Colorado. It has a lake that allows motor boats. During high usage times, it gets smelly on the beach from boat exhaust. But people love to be there, it gets super crowded during the peak times of the summer. They also rent paddle boats on site. We visited the two swim beaches. One thing that is disappointing is that the swim beach is all gravel. It's really hard on the feet. Bring some sort of water shoes. The campsites are pretty centralized, all pretty close to the restrooms. The water was nice. The sites spacious and very accommodating. Definitely will camp there again. Another cool thing is they have 13 geocaches in the park, while we didn't have time to go find them, they are there and we were able to look them up. We will save that for another time.

    Glenwood Canyon Resort

    Camping on the Colorado River

At Glenwood Canyon Resort you get to camp right on the Colorado River in a beautiful canyon but its definitely the most expensive tent camping I've ever paid for. Amenities are taken care of from the store at the check in station to the bar and grill that's on site. It has an awesome deck with a view of the canyon but I didn't get to enjoy it. When we checked in we were told it was pet friendly but when we went the bar tender told us our dogs weren't allowed and didn't seem happy to be there, so I had to go back to the campsite and eat and drink by myself. It's okay though because when my wife came back she said the food wasn't that great and they had no craft beer on tap. Aside from all that, the number of outdoor activities and place to see around here are endless, whitewater rafting, kayaking, skiing, mountain biking, climbing, hang gliding, disc golf, etc.......are all within a short car or bike ride and that's were all 3 stars are earned. Definitely worth it if your just passing through but there are many options around here if your staying for some time.

    Glenwood Canyon Resort

    Overpriced and underwhelming

This campground is conveniently located off of I-70 just a few miles from Glenwood Springs in No Name, CO. The staff are pleasant and the office was very clean with some cute souvenirs available for purchase.

This place is EXPENSIVE. It is not worth the nightly rate. You are paying for the proximity to town and if you reserved a waterfront site, the view. The campsites are tiny, so be prepared to back your travel trailer into a tight spot and make friends with your neighbors. You will be in their campsite while setting up your rig and vice versa.

The No Name Grill & Bar was still closed when we were here (May ‘21), which was not disclosed on their site. The WiFi is a single unsecured access point near the laundry/bath house that did not work. There is no WiFi available in the actual campground. We had 2 bars of cell coverage on AT&T. Laundry is pricey too; $4/load for washer and $3/load for dryer. There is no vending for detergent or dryer sheets, so pack accordingly.

As beautiful as it was to be right next to the Colorado river, this place is not at all worth the cost. Save your money and drive the 90 miles to Grand Junction or Fruita for more affordable campgrounds with better amenities.

Tried to camp there last week on a trip out west but I-70 was closed by the Colorado Dept of Transportation at mile marker 116 because of a mudslide. I was coming from Grand Junction and the Glenwood Canyon Resort is at MM 119 so there was no way to get there from the West. I tried to call the office but it was after 6 pm so no one answered. Found a place to plug in and called the next morning to get a refund and was told their no cancellation policy wouldn't allow me to get a refund even when the highway was closed in the canyon which does happen now and then. Their lame justification was that other people made it there last night and implied that I should have kept driving into a closed interstate highway and try to sneak through. Amazing. I lost the mobile signal while discussing and called back several times and left a voicemail but they didn't want to deal with me so this is my only option. So, unless you are willing to give them your money with no recourse when Glenwood Canyon closes, you are at risk of losing it.

    Glenwood Springs West/Colorado River KOA

    A stand-out KOA

I typically rate campgrounds as they fit into 1 of 5 categories. This campground will be rated as a Basecamp — grounds that offer a comfortable home base that you’re happy to return to after a day of exploring the surrounding area. Ratings for this category are based on: Value to cost: 5 Overall grounds: 5 Utility of sites (hookups, layout, accessibility): 5 Local Attraction Proximity: 4 Reservation Process/Ease of Getting a Site: 5 Amenities: 5 Customer Service: 5 Cleanliness: 5

This KOA Holiday is, by far, the nicest we’ve seen. It seems brand new with a lovely layout, nice patches of grass and room between spaces and the Colorado River running right by. In COVID times, pool areas were highly restricted, so we didn’t bother (there were tons of kids at the grounds over Labor Day weekend). They have an awesome water feature area and playground for kids too! There’s a little trail to explore the river island.

There is a nice gas station and market not 100’ from the front office. And gas prices are cheap! Front office staff were very friendly.

There was a set of bathrooms, showers and a small laundry room by us. We used neither but both seemed nice and were cleaned consistently every day. The park is very close to a few shops and restaurants in the small town of Silt. Glenwood Springs is about 20 minutes down the road... easy access to the Hot Springs. And Rifle State Park is about 30 minutes away. It’s super easy access right off 70 freeway, but no car noise.

The hookups were laid out nicely and worked well. WiFi was as good as we’ve ever experienced at a campground. We paid for a patio and enjoyed the “fancier” setup. One word of advice... if you want to book a site by the river (they look awesome), make sure you have some bug spray... mosquitos seem to be abundant closer to the water.

    Palisade Basecamp RV Resort

Ranger review of Morsel Spork at Palisade Basecamp

    Campground Review

I only stayed for an overnight but I did make a reservation, although they were not full. They do close at 6pm (the office does) so late entry doesn't work unless you have made a reservation. I found my map and site info in a mailbox at the office entry. I chose to stay in the section along the river. All the way in the very last site, I think it was site 9. When I got to my site, there weren't very many other campers but I was quickly greeted by a man in a golf cart. Turns out he was the camp host. He was really coming down to view the sunset, which was very nice, but he also chatted with me for a bit.

The site itself was quite small. It was a good thing I had a very small tent. I spent a bit of time just trying to decide where I'd put it due to signs stating no camping beyond a certain point. The camp host kind of sorted it out with me. But I have a tiny two man tent and it was the perfect size for it. There was a picnic table, what appeared to be a brand new firing (this campground is new) and an electric outlet. Of course, there was also the fabulous view of the Colorado River just about 200 feet away. The bathrooms were up the ridge, although there was a porta potty just at the end of the riverfront sites. The bathrooms were pretty extravagant. Heated, flush toilets, free showers, running water sinks, mirrors galore. There were also family restrooms, I did not explore those. Laundry facilities were also onsite. Along with greenhouses, gardens, a swimming pool and a hot tub. What looked like an area to have a gathering with a grill. There was a trail that went around the park too. Up until recently the Colorado River has been too low to fish but I imagine fishing is about to get better now that it's really flowing.

    Product Review

As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products to test from time to time - today I am testing Morsel Sporks. I went with the XL Morsel Sporks because we do a lot of eating out of a bag when we are in fire bans, which is often. This trip was no exception, except we are not in a fire ban. At first glance, these sporks seem really durable. Which is good, camping can be rough on utensils. I noted the spoon on one end and the rubber edge for getting every last bit, also the fork with the knife like edge on it. I did use the knife like edge to cut ham and it worked fairly well, not as well as an actual knife but that can be expected. The meals I had this trip made more use of the spoon then the fork. I had a chowder for dinner, which I transferred to a bowl due to the bag it came in being too narrow to really use the morsel spork. The other meal was granola and that package was perfect for the morsel spork. I didn't have any trouble with the spoon for mixing or eating. It held a good amount of food. The spork fit in my mouth well, I have a small mouth and sometimes if a utensil is too big it can be difficult to get in my mouth, but this fit well. They were so simple to clean too. I was using just a jetboil and was able to get my morsel sporks completely clean. Food didn't get stuck anywhere. Another feature that may become useful is the hole on the end of the fork that I could use to attach my spork to my bike while I travel. They are dishwasher safe and BPA free so I am confidant that I can add these sporks to my camping routine.
