Beautiful and Secluded

I was alone here took forever to find a spot that wasn’t a closed gate because of the weather. I was ecstatic when I found this area using the MVUM for Boulder area. Kind of tough to get up there but I did it slowly and carefully in my small low clearance awd suv. Was definitely worth the drive to me plenty of rocks to climb for views. You must just watch for private property signs, if you’re adventurous you’ll like this area. I visited middle of June.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is MVUM dispersed camping and how does it work?

MVUM dispersed camping refers to camping on National Forest land using designated Motor Vehicle Use Maps to locate legal camping areas. These are primitive sites without developed facilities, offering a more remote camping experience. At MVUM 496.1 Dispersed Site in the Boulder area, you can camp for free in undeveloped spots. The experience provides solitude and connection with nature, though access requires careful navigation. You simply find an appropriate pullout or clearing along designated routes shown on the MVUM, set up camp, and practice Leave No Trace principles. This type of camping is ideal for those seeking a more authentic outdoor experience away from established campgrounds.

What rules and regulations apply to MVUM dispersed camping areas?

When camping at MVUM 496.1 Dispersed Site, you must follow standard dispersed camping regulations: camp only in previously used spots, stay at least 100 feet from water sources, and pack out all trash. Fire restrictions may apply seasonally, so always check current conditions. The standard stay limit is 14 days in a 30-day period. Vehicle access is limited to designated routes on the MVUM - driving off these routes is prohibited. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for reaching this site. No facilities are provided, so bring water and proper waste disposal supplies. Weather conditions can affect accessibility, particularly in winter months, occasionally resulting in closed gates. Always practice Leave No Trace principles and respect wildlife and other campers.

How do I read and interpret a Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) for dispersed camping?

Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) show forest roads where dispersed camping is permitted. When reading an MVUM, look for roads marked with dots or specific symbols indicating dispersed camping is allowed. For MVUM 496.1 Dispersed Site, focus on route 496.1 on the Boulder area map. The map uses different line types and colors to indicate road types and seasonal restrictions. Roads may be classified by vehicle type (highway-legal only vs. all vehicles). Pay attention to dates when roads are open and any width or length restrictions. Some MVUMs include small numbers showing the distance you can travel off-road to camp (typically 30-300 feet). These maps are essential tools for finding legal camping areas and avoiding closed gates or restricted areas.
