Description
Open high-desert terrain at roughly 8,000 feet on the north side of Great Sand Dunes National Park marks this Forest Service trailhead, which serves as a quiet jumping-off point for backcountry access into the park via an old sand trail. The large dirt lot is open and flat, with wide views of the Sangre de Cristo foothills, a pit toilet on-site, and enough room for vans and smaller rigs to park overnight without issue. Expect solitude most nights, though day hikers begin arriving in the early morning.
