Great area but barren campground

Pulled into this area for a quick overnight during a multi spot camping trip. Campground is what youd expect with restrooms and trash. The main downfall of this spot is the lack of trees or cover. We were able to grab one of the spots next to the creek and pitch a tent but even that was rough due to very little available space for tents in a lot of the spots. Good RV/trailer campground and if you have some offroad toys its a good homebase although you have to find the bigger spots to fit in. Not good, not bad, just right in the middle.

It’s a shame .

Used to use this campground during bow season for elk. The beetle kill has decimated 99% of the trees. No one was there. You’d be hard pressed for tent spots in some of the spots, though site 1 along the creek looked good still. Very rocky an stumped. I could see putting an RV or tent trailer, but almost no shade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Pines Campground located in Colorado?

Pines Campground is located near Gould and Walden in Colorado, nestled in the Roosevelt National Forest. The campground sits alongside a creek in a mountain setting. It's positioned in an area that was once heavily forested, though pine beetle damage has significantly changed the landscape in recent years. This high-elevation campground provides access to surrounding wilderness areas and is a traditional spot for hunters during elk season.

What amenities are available at Pines Campground in Colorado?

Pines Campground offers basic amenities including restrooms and trash collection. The campground features multiple designated sites, with some positioned along a creek. While the campground is suitable for RVs and tent trailers, tent campers may find limited flat spots due to rocky terrain and tree stumps. Water access is available from the creek, though visitors should bring their own drinking water. The natural setting is the primary amenity, though shade is limited due to tree loss.

What do reviews say about Pines Campground in Colorado?

Pines Campground has experienced significant changes due to pine beetle infestation, with approximately 99% of trees affected. Site #1 along the creek remains one of the better options for camping. The terrain is quite rocky with many stumps, making it challenging to find suitable tent spots in most areas. While RVs and tent trailers can be accommodated, traditional tent camping requires careful site selection. The campground offers the expected basic facilities but lacks substantial tree cover or shade. Despite these challenges, the creek provides a pleasant natural feature for those who secure streamside sites.

Are there photos available of Pines Campground before I visit?

Yes, photos of Pines Campground are available online through camping websites and forest service resources. These images can help you understand the current landscape conditions, including the limited tree cover due to beetle kill and the creek-side setting of certain campsites. Photos will show the rocky terrain and remaining vegetation, which is helpful for planning your setup. Before visiting, check official Forest Service websites or camping platforms for the most current visual representation of the campground.
