Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Elk Wallow Campground located and how do I get there?

Elk Wallow Campground is located in the Upper Frying Pan River Valley, making it the most remote campground in this area. The campground sits alongside the North Fork Frying Pan River, separated by a split rail fence. To reach Elk Wallow, you'll need to navigate through the Frying Pan River Valley. Be prepared for a remote journey, as this campground is deliberately set away from more developed areas. Given its remote location, it's advisable to bring detailed maps and ensure your vehicle is suitable for potentially rugged terrain. The surrounding area includes private property, so stay on designated routes when approaching the campground.

Do I need reservations for Elk Wallow Campground?

Elk Wallow Campground likely operates on a first-come, first-served basis without a formal reservation system, which is typical for remote forest service campgrounds. Due to its remote location in the Upper Frying Pan River Valley, it may not experience the same crowds as more accessible campgrounds, but arriving early is still recommended during peak summer weekends and holidays. For the most current reservation policies, contact the local Forest Service office that manages the White River National Forest. Given the campground's remoteness, having a backup plan is advisable in case all sites are occupied upon arrival.

What amenities and facilities are available at Elk Wallow Campground?

Elk Wallow Campground offers a primitive camping experience with minimal amenities, which is part of its appeal for those seeking remoteness. The campground is situated along the North Fork Frying Pan River, providing access to water and fishing opportunities. Basic facilities likely include vault toilets and designated campsites. Don't expect modern conveniences like showers, electricity, or cell service. The campground's main feature is its natural setting and quiet atmosphere, bordered by a split rail fence separating it from the river. Pack in all necessary supplies, including water purification methods if you plan to use river water.
