Wildlife viewing and a side trip to the lava tubes at Lava Beds National Monument draw campers to this free dispersed site in Modoc National Forest. The access route is straightforward: nine miles of paved road followed by a half-mile of well-graded dirt, with pull-through room for rigs up to 32 feet. Cell service runs at one to two bars on Verizon and stronger on T-Mobile. One practical note: logging trucks use this road on weekday mornings, kicking up fine silty dust, so weekends tend to be quieter. Pack out all trash and top off your fuel tank before heading in.
