With rates ranging from $80-$699 per night and reservations available, Big Sur Campground & Cabins operates as a private facility along Highway 1 that accommodates both RVs up to 40 feet and tent campers. The campground sits among redwood trees with direct river access, offering full hookups including electric, water, and dump station services.
Sites spread throughout the forested property, with some positioned directly alongside the river and others set back among the towering trees. The Lopez F. notes that "each site is semi private, surrounded with big redwood trees." The river-adjacent sites prove popular for their water access, though campers report these spots tend to be shadier and can become muddy during rainy periods. Sites away from the water receive more sunlight, which benefits solar-powered setups.
The facility maintains clean restrooms and shower houses with hot water, shampoo, and regular cleaning throughout the day. A playground serves families with children, while an on-site general store stocks food, beverages, and camping supplies. Free amenities include ice, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. Each reservation comes with a welcome package containing mugs, flashlight, deck of cards, and firewood bundle. The property allows campfires and welcomes pets.
Cell phone reception remains spotty to nonexistent throughout the campground, creating a disconnect from digital distractions. The river provides swimming opportunities and gentle rapids suitable for floating. Road noise from Highway 1 reaches some sites, though many campers find the river sounds mask traffic. Winter storms can create muddy conditions and occasionally close southern access routes.
For those seeking different accommodations, Fernwood operates nearby with its own distinct character and amenities.
