Timber Top Camp

Hiking is the only way into Timber Top Camp, a dispersed site in Big Sur requiring a roughly 2.8-mile trail approach. Access conditions matter here: at least one recent visitor found the forest road to the trailhead gated and restricted, which added significant distance to the approach. Campfires are permitted. Campsites are distributed across multiple hilltops along the trail, so options exist even if hikers stop short of the highest points. This camp works best for those comfortable with variable access conditions and a moderate hike-in commitment. Campers researching campgrounds around Big Sur will find drive-in alternatives nearby, including Ventana Campground roughly 2.8 miles to the west.

NO CAMPFIRES ALLOWED IN BIG SUR EVER!

I’m pretty sure that going thru a locked gate is trespassing. As far as campfires this is not ever allowed in Big Sur. Some jackass came this weekend bc of this false information and now we have a huge forest fire. All of the animals will die, be injured and lose their homes not to mention the people who live here. Why the hell did U guys encourage people to come here. You should be 100% responsible for the entire mess.

NO FIRE ALLOWED IN BIG SUR

Y'all think you can just camp in and start a fire in a high fire zone at the peak of summer??!!! Use your brains. Whomever went camping there over the weekend has started 1,330 acre fire as I write this. Don't be stupid campers, stay off private property and light NO fires. The whole country is on fire idiots! People's lives, homes and business are at risk. BE SMART.

not accessible

I was planning to camp here and was prepared to hike in the 2.8 miles but when I arrived to the national Forest the road to get to the trailhead is blocked by a gate and it is restricted. everywhere I saw online, including here said nothing about needing a permit or special access to get in, but I was unable to access the site and would have had to hike in 11 miles to get to the trailhead. I was super excited to camp here and will maybe return if access is available.

Mountains and Ocean

This might be the most beautiful camping spot I have ever stayed at. It’s a ~2.8 mile hike in, but it is worth every step. Almost every hill top has a campsite, there is so many opportunities for stays. Even if you can make it to the top, there are spots to camp all along the trail!
