The Oak Flat Lookout sits the Greenhorn Mountains in the Sequoia National Forest and Sequoia National Monument, about an hour from Bakersfield, California. Perched at an elevation of 4,900 feet, the tower overlooks the scenic Kern River and Kern River Valley and has panoramic views of the mountains, river and valley. Oak Flat Lookout was constructed in 1934 to provide fire detection views along the Kern River Canyon. In the early years of the Forest Service, lookouts provided a crucial link in wild land management, often being the only source of communication and fire detection for many miles. The lookout was operational until the 1980s. There is no electricity or water in the lookout. All provisions, including food, water and bedding, must be carried up 40 steep steps to the tower space or pulled hand-over-hand in a small basket pulley system.
Birdwatching and stargazing from the tower or the mountaintop are popular pastimes. For guests who wish to visit an operating lookout, Breckenridge Lookout located southeast of Oak Flat is open during the summer months.

Stayed in van in tent space 52. Bathrooms had showers with hot water, clean. Had laundry but we didn't use. No real walking trails in the area but were able to go down to the river and there was a swimming hole,$40 for holiday weekend. Lady at front desk was nice and very helpful over the phone and in person- saved us a space even tho we didn't have reservation over memorial day weekend. Tent spaces were adjacent with little space between and around a large parking lot. Friendly, quiet.
ScoutWe were so happy that we found this spot in the evening, after we had a reservation for a different campground and were so disappointed. Here we found a nice spot under a tree. Everything was clean, good WiFi and access to the river.

Communication with the host was amazing, we went from the Thursday before Memorial Day to Memorial Monday. Everything was amazing. Very quiet community.
Full hookups for our 5th wheel, spacious sites, flushing restrooms and showers if you wanted. Starlink worked perfect, though there was wifi available.
A couple notes:
Zero Cell coverage (we took that as a good thing), but make sure to download your google map.
The drive up is a little daunting with going up the mountain, but the road was fine just take your time it will be worth it.

Relatively small campground. Camp host was nonexistent. Lots of trees in most campsites. The non yurt sites didn’t have bear lockers. Fire ring was in rough shape. Loud neighbors first night. Second had techno from group site until late. Ponderosa general store was going to be my go to for firewood but it had burned down. So foraged for wood and picked up some at the campground at trail of 100 giants. Vault toilets were clean and stocked. Water spigot scattered around campground. No cell service on Verizon or wifi. Would come back here.
ScoutFantastic secluded campground with all amenities you need. Clean, quiet and convenient access to Sequoia National Park. With lovely staff who were extremely knowledgeable and accommodating, I would highly recommend these grounds for both tent camping and/or RV camping.

TravelerGreat campsite (#21) right on rivers' edge. Winter runoff and water is high and fast. Shade during the day. Restrooms are being rebuilt but should be ready by mid to end of June. Porta potties for now but they are very clean. Geese, grebes, egrets, lots of ground squirrels and raccoons.

Campground is nice overall. Sites are close together and site 4 has a small uphill to back into which if you have a RV or heavy camper your going to scrap hard backing in. Overall nice campground.

Most reviews here are dated. Campground has been abandoned for years so: no fees, busted up roads, no water, no trash, no bathrooms, no cell/wifi. Basically dispersed camping in an awesome location on concrete spurs/pads. Each site still had picnic table and fire pit. The mosquitos here are biblical at night so bring your nets and deet. Kern creek and trails right from campground. General store and Grumpy Bear tavern close down the road. Only 2 other campers here when I stayed in October. Great place as long as you are expecting disbursed camping experience.

ScoutCamp James is a clean, spacious park. All sites are well kept, with access to clean bathrooms and coin operated showers. Staff is friendly and available when needed. Prices are a tad high but expected with a clean upscale Campground. Didn't expect a 3 night minimum charge the weekend after Labor Day but couldn't find a Campground with availability in a short time so we rolled with the 3 day requirement . A friendly family of bears made their presence at night as the trash cans were ransacked in the morning and my boyfriend came face to face with a skunk while walking our dog at night. Overall it's a beautiful park right on the Kern River and we would stay again if we could get one of the few riverfront spaces.
ScoutIt was a very peaceful and calm campground on the I stayed in one of the yurts. It was very clean and there is a bunkbed with two full size beds and another separate full size bed. The bathrooms were also kept very clean. I didn’t get a chance to go hiking in the area, but there are trails nearby. There is no service but it is about a 5 minute drive from a cafe/store/lodge that has Wi-Fi. I was in site 28. Sites 6-10 looked amazing for tent camping.

GuideIt's a beautiful campground. The campground hosts never came around and it felt like we could have stayed for free. We had some questions about the area and in order to get some answers we had to drive to the nearest people. No cell service which is fine, vault toilets are a little smelly or at least the one near us. Beautiful campground, we saw no wildlife besides ground squirrels and some birds. We had a trail camera set up all night every night and caught nothing.

GuideGreat place to stay right outside the Sequoia Forest Park. Dry campsites were a little cramped, but not too bad. Showers were nice, but we got unlucky and took one right as the hot water ran out. Nice sink for doing dishes, too. The woman at the front desk is a national treasure, and was really friendly and helpful. Bathrooms are cleaned daily.

TravelerWhat a great campsite! I only stayed one night, wish I could have stayed longer! The camp host Trudi was wonderful. She made sure that you had everything you needed for your stay. The bathrooms had flush toilets and hot showers that were very CLEAN. That is usually very hard to find when you are camping! The entire campsite was clean and well maintained. I will definitely be coming back!
TravelerWell maintained campground with well-spaced sites, you never feel like you're in your neighbor's lap. Sites along the river feel a little less private simply because everyone walks along the river, but there's really plenty of room. Lots of trees, so it would be cool in the summer. Great birds along the river, lots of ducks and egrets, and a bald eagle perched in a tree right above my site with its breakfish! Great place to stay on the way to Death Valley or up the central valley to Fresno.
LegendWe stayed here just for a night on our way to Death Valley. It’s super convenient from Bakersfield and nice and quiet, by the Kern River. Clean and calm with some nice sites by the river. All have picnic tables and fire rings. The host was so lovely and let us stay for free in a site that had already been paid for (the folks had left early). We couldn’t believe it! So generous and kind.
