Calico Ghost Town Regional Park offers basic cabins with bunk beds, a regular bed, air conditioning, and heating. According to one visitor, "They have bunks, a bed AC and heat and that's it. You have to use the public restrooms and showers." The cabins lack private bathrooms or kitchens, requiring guests to use communal facilities. Barstow-Calico KOA provides cabin accommodations with more amenities, including nearby showers and restrooms. Lone Wolf Colony and Mojave River Forks Regional Park also feature cabin options with varying levels of amenities. North Shore Campground near Lake Almanor offers cabins as an alternative to tent camping.

Rustic cabins predominate at most Barstow area campgrounds, with basic furnishings and minimal amenities. Calico Ghost Town's bunkhouse cabins feature multiple sleeping arrangements including twin bunks and futon-style sofas. One camper shared, "Small kitchen was perfect for our needs. We would recommend the cabin and we will definitely visit again to visit the ghost town." Most properties are pet-friendly with specific restrictions, typically allowing two pets per accommodation. Reservations are essential, particularly during peak tourist seasons when visiting the historic Calico Ghost Town attraction.

Most cabins provide beds but require guests to bring their own linens, pillows, and personal items. Bathroom facilities are typically shared, with varying cleanliness levels noted in reviews. On-site markets at Calico Ghost Town and Barstow-Calico KOA offer basic provisions, though selection is limited. Cooking facilities vary significantly between properties - some include small kitchenettes while others provide only outdoor fire pits or grills. The Deep Creek Hot Springs Camp Retreat cabins include picnic tables for outdoor dining, while some KOA cabins feature more complete cooking facilities. Winter visitors should prepare for potential temperature extremes, as desert nights can be particularly cold.

      Barstow-Calico KOA

Nice KOA for an overnight stop.

Nice KOA for an overnight stop. The campground is clean, quiet, and well maintained, and the dog park was excellent—our dogs really enjoyed stretching their legs after a long drive. The only issue was the pull-through full-hookup site. The sewer connection was on the wrong (driver's) side and located near the front of the truck, so our standard sewer hose wouldn't reach. We needed about a 30-foot sewer hose to make the connection. Overall, we'd definitely stay here again. Just be prepared if you plan to use the sewer hookup in a pull-through site.

      Calico Ghost Town

      Deselete and hot.

Town is wonderful. Campground not so much. Sites way out of level. No Campground decorations, just dirt and rocks. Very tight sites.

      Calico Ghost Town

      Convenient but dusty

The campground is right next to the Ghost Town. The toilets and showers are clean, but the site I was on wasn’t very level. There was no shade, but they do offer full hookups.

      Barstow-Calico KOA

      Just okay

My husband and I were just passing through, and I personally wouldn't stay there again. It was very dusty and depressing. There was a dog that had been dumped there, and I could see that the staff had been taking care of it, seemed like good people making the best of a bad area.

      Calico Ghost Town

      Good but not great.

Okay campground if you don't mind off road racers, dust, loud noise and obnoxious campers. Get rid of those idiots that are destroying the desert and it would be a great place to camp.

      Calico Ghost Town

      Crowded OHV park

Decent overnight. OHV oriented place. Next to Ghost Town tourist venue. Crowded and tight spaces but we fit our 43’ 5th wheel.

    Guide to Barstow

The Barstow area sits at approximately 2,000 feet elevation in California's high desert, experiencing summer temperatures that regularly exceed 100°F and winter nights that can drop below freezing. Desert camping cabins near Barstow offer shelter from these temperature extremes while providing convenient access to nearby attractions like Calico Ghost Town and regional hiking trails. Weather conditions can change rapidly with strong winds common throughout the year.

    What to do

Explore historic mining sites: Calico Ghost Town Regional Park offers direct access to preserved mining operations. "There's little in the way of privacy but being tucked into the canyon makes it all feel less crowded and more intimate than it otherwise might," notes one visitor about the camping area's relationship to the historic site.

Visit nearby hot springs: The Deep Creek Hot Springs Camp Retreat provides access to natural thermal pools. "The deep creek hot springs were absolutely fabulous, as they were situated next to a cold creek where we could do therapeutic hot cold plunges," reports a camper who appreciated the contrast between hot and cold water features.

Participate in off-highway vehicle recreation: Desert terrain surrounding Barstow accommodates various motorized activities. "Great OHV camping with full hookups!! Free admission to Ghost Town with camping reservation. Good fall to spring. Way to hot in summer," advises an experienced visitor about seasonal timing for this popular activity.

    What campers like

Stargazing opportunities: Desert nights provide exceptional celestial viewing conditions with minimal light pollution. "Easy going campground with all the necessary amenities for camping and a great spot for our large group... it takes you away from all signs of the city and surrounds you in nature," explains a visitor to the region.

Ghost town access included with camping: Barstow-Calico KOA provides convenient access to historical attractions. "A great spot that we can't wait to go back and spend a couple of days at. The amenities at this KOA are great. Spring and fall temperature moderation: Desert camping cabins near Barstow are most comfortable during transition seasons. "Good fall to spring. Way to hot in summer. No shade," advises a visitor who learned the importance of timing desert trips appropriately to avoid extreme heat.

    What you should know

Bathroom facilities vary significantly: Mojave River Forks Regional Park offers improved restroom facilities. "We found the campground to be very clean and well-maintained. The toilet facilities were also very clean and did not smell," reports a satisfied visitor, contrasting with more basic facilities at other locations.

Desert winds can be severe: Preparation for gusty conditions is essential when staying in cabin accommodations. "It was incredibly windy when we went in April 2021. In addition to the wind, it was very chilly in the evenings and through the night. Plan accordingly," advises a camper about the challenging weather conditions.
