Seven miles southwest of Davis Creek, Lassen Creek Campground sits along a small creek within Modoc National Forest, operating from mid-May through mid-October. The Forest Service facility requires drive-in or walk-in access via dirt roads that multiple reviewers describe as rough but manageable for most vehicles. Sites spread across open terrain dotted with mature evergreens, with several positioned directly alongside the creek.
The campground functions more like dispersed camping than a traditional facility. Crystal B. notes "there were not designated camp sites - find a fire ring, and camp away," with neighbors often spaced over 200 yards apart. Several sites include stone fire rings and some have built-in stone stoves. Pit toilets provide the primary amenities, and the facility allows alcohol but prohibits pets. Reviewers consistently mention the clean conditions and abundant shade from surrounding conifers.
Access requires careful navigation, as GPS systems sometimes direct visitors through private, gated roads. Diane V. successfully towed an 18-foot travel trailer but recommends nothing longer than 25 feet due to site constraints. The creek provides a natural soundtrack, and the remote location eliminates traffic noise according to multiple visitors.
Plan to bring everything needed for dry camping, as no water or electrical hookups exist. The campground serves rockhounds well, positioned near Davis Creek's obsidian collecting areas.
Description
