McConnell State Recreation Area Campground

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

McConnell State Recreation Area sits along the Merced River in California's Central Valley, managed by California State Parks and open year-round to tent campers and RVs up to 30 feet. The 21 tent sites vary in shade coverage, with most but not all sites having tree cover overhead. The Merced River runs along the eastern edge of the park, and while river access is a draw for many visitors, water levels and swimming conditions can shift seasonally, so it's worth checking current conditions before arrival.

Noise levels on weekends can be significant. Reviewers note that the group and day-use area draws large gatherings, and music from multiple campsites has been reported running late into the evening on summer weekends. The off-season draws a quieter crowd, and at least one regular visitor specifically prefers arriving outside peak months. Showers are available but have drawn mixed feedback: David D. describes them as having "standing water and hot water is limited," so managing expectations there is reasonable.

Reservations are available and worth booking in advance for weekend stays. Sites include picnic tables, campfires are allowed, and cell service is present. The Merced River Resort is another option in the area, and those exploring the broader region can find camping near McConnell State Recreation Area to compare alternatives. Weekday visits in spring or fall tend to offer the most manageable conditions at this campground.

Suggest weekdays...

Nice location along Merced river...was quite surprised. Most sites have shade. The river is very high at the moment, so swimming is currently prohibited.

Unfortunately it was a mess Fri-Sun mid-June 6/23 with loud Norteño music being blasted from multiple campsites and the day/group area in particular. Very loud and non-stop. Lots of large families having fun, but was seldom a peaceful moment, even late into the evening.

Bring earplugs, or maybe try weekdays? if you prefer R&R without the noise pollution - SP employees don't bother to deal with the problem.

Good camp ground, needs maintenance.

Good tent camping. The Merced river runs along the east side of thr Park. I think there are beaches but can't confirm it (see pics).21 tent sites ,showers, bathrooms, lost of tables and water for the sights to share. The camp does need to catch up with maintenance in he facility though, lighting and cleaning. No camp host while we were there, that could be why?

Nice grounds

Nice and quiet. Sites are large. Showers are terrible, standing water and hot water is limited. Staff are great though.

Little bit of green along the river

Probably COVID related but this park is under utilized and under attended. The shower is of if you throw in quarters and close your eyes. It could use some TLC but was a quite place to stop for the night.

Not all spots have shade.
