Independence Creek Campground operates as a county-managed facility positioned one mile off Highway 395 at the base of Onion Valley Road. The campground accommodates RVs up to 31 feet with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer connections at $14 per night. A small creek runs through the property, with sites on the far side providing mountain views toward the Eastern Sierra range.
The facility features fire pits, picnic tables, and vault toilets that campers report as clean and well-maintained. Payment requires advance reservations through an app system, as no on-site payment options exist for late arrivals. Sites sit fairly close together among big trees, creating a mix of open and forested terrain. The location serves as a convenient base for accessing campgrounds near Independence or reaching nearby trailheads up Onion Valley Road.
Description
This small, family friendly campground is located on the banks of Independence Creek, just a half mile outside the town of Independence, the Inyo County seat. The Eastern California Museum is nearby, and the Manzanar Japanese American Internment Camp, which is now a National Historic Site, is just six miles away. The gentle stream is regularly stocked with trout, and the surrounding open land can be explored on foot, bike and on ATVs traveling on existing dirt roads. A paved road provides access to Onion Valley, a striking Sierra landscape where a short hike leads to the John Muir Wilderness, dozens of high Sierra lakes and access to the Pacific Crest and John Muir trails.
