Beautiful campground

If you like to fish and hike this is a lovely place. Pro-tip: the spot next to the camp host is the best. The ones down the hill by the river are smaller, dark and cold.

Friendly clean and fantastic

Had a great stay here. It was beautiful and it was clean and the campsite was the most nicely groomed I think I’ve ever stayed at. The caretakers really do a great job here and the woman who took care of me was very friendly and helpful and got me the exact spot that I wanted next to the river.

Quiet, Creek Side Camping

🌲 Do your part and keep this campground clean & quiet!

My partner and I camped here on a Sunday night. We arrived mid-day, and asked the camp host (Adam) if they had any spots available. He was happy we stopped by and gave use a creek side spot with parking. A site is $28 per night and they sell bundles of firewood for $8. Our spot was beautiful, and luckily the campsite adjoining ours and the other nearby site was empty. Every campsite has a nice fire pit with grills, a charcoal grill, and a picnic table nearby. We were right by one of the toilets and a dumpster which was super convenient, only major downside was that even though the toilet was very well maintained, it did smell and have a lot of flies (please close the lid). The river was great for a dip(was about 1 ft deep at the time but seemed low) and very relaxing. The campground was extremely quiet and everyone seemed respectful, however, I’ve given this campsite 4 stars because I imagine having neighbors next door on a busy weekend could be a little less private than ideal. Overall though, it was a lovely site and I would definitely return. Also, there were a ton of blue jays and other birds.

Quiet & Spacious

We were happy to find a spot after already visiting 3-4 of our regular spots that were already full (and this was on a Wednesday!). Camp host asked us if we wanted to be in the village or quiet. We choose quiet because those spots were bigger and we had quite a few dogs. The camp host was very friendly and kept the place clean, even the bathrooms. Even gave us tips on where to fish and the best time to visit.

River nearby!

Really liked this campground. Very well maintained and on the Silver Fork of American River. Camp host was nice, but didn't recognize discount for US National Park Pass. $23/night.

Will return, but only with more people to split the bill.

So quiet

Big sites! Great spacing between neighbors. Nice and shaded, paved. No cell service with AT & T. Great swim area for the kids with just a short walk. Love the Kyburz area. Vault toliets, though fairly well maintained. Will visit again and again!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is China Flat Campground worth visiting based on camper reviews?

China Flat Campground is definitely worth visiting! Campers consistently highlight the big, well-spaced sites, beautiful location along the Silver Fork of the American River, and exceptionally well-maintained grounds. The camp hosts receive praise for being friendly and helpful, often going above and beyond to ensure guests get their preferred spots. While some mention the $28 nightly fee is a bit steep for a primitive campground, the peaceful setting, river access, and cleanliness make it a valued destination, particularly for those who enjoy fishing, hiking, and swimming.

What amenities and facilities are available at China Flat Campground?

China Flat Campground offers paved campsites with good spacing between neighbors and plenty of shade. The facilities include well-maintained vault toilets, though no running water or shower facilities are available. The campground sits on the Silver Fork of the American River, providing access to a nice swimming area that's just a short walk away. The nightly fee is $28, and it's worth noting that there's no cell service with AT&T in the area. While the National Park Pass isn't recognized for discounts here, the campground is well-maintained by attentive camp hosts.

How is China Flat Day Use Area different from the campground?

The China Flat Day Use Area provides access to the Silver Fork of the American River for day visitors, focusing primarily on swimming, fishing, and hiking opportunities without overnight accommodations. Unlike the campground which requires the $28 nightly fee and offers designated campsites with parking, the day use area is designed for shorter visits. The campground offers more amenities including vault toilets and established camping spots, while the day use area primarily serves as an access point to enjoy the river and surrounding natural features for a few hours. Both share the beautiful Kyburz area setting and river access.

What does China Flat Campground look like?

China Flat Campground features beautifully maintained, paved campsites nestled among shade trees with excellent spacing between neighbors. The campground is divided into different areas, with some sites positioned along the Silver Fork of the American River and others up the hill. Riverside sites tend to be smaller, darker, and cooler, while the upper sites are more spacious. The grounds are exceptionally well-groomed with a natural, forested setting. Some campsites offer creek-side locations with dedicated parking, and the overall atmosphere is peaceful and scenic, making it ideal for nature lovers.
