Hiking and biking trails wind through the rounded granite formations of Alabama Hills on Movie Flat Road, a dispersed BLM camping area outside Lone Pine in California's Owens Valley. The site sits beneath the eastern face of the Sierra Nevada, with open sightlines toward the range that Felix S. describes as "world class." Camping here is free, but campers should pick up a permit online or at one of the info kiosks along the road before settling in.
Crowding is a real factor. Even midweek in May, the most sought-after spots tend to fill up, and a number of previously open areas have been signed as no-camping zones, reducing available dispersed sites considerably. Cell reception varies by location. Some campsites have no signal, though walking toward the road typically restores some coverage. Cleanliness has been manageable in recent visits, with occasional broken glass and waste requiring attention from conscientious campers.
Big rigs can access the area, and campfires, pets, and alcohol are all permitted. The 14-day stay limit gives campers enough time to explore the surrounding terrain thoroughly. Those who want more structured options nearby can look at Alabama Hills Recreation Area, roughly 0.4 miles southeast, or Movie Road/Alabama Hills Dispersed Camping to the northwest for a comparable dispersed experience.
