Amazing Sunset!

I camped in my SUV! First time ever! Best experience in my life. Great spot. The road was a little bumpy but not horrible.

Great spot!

I camped at the end of the road near the trailhead. There was only one other group there so I figured it was a nice, spaced out area. Obviously I wasn’t using my brain because everyone goes all the way to the end of the road before turning around, everyone parks there to hike the trail, and it was Friday night😅 when we woke up it felt like we were in a parking lot. I’d give it 5 stars if I had picked a better spot and not gone on a Friday night. One of my dogs is slightly reactive so I was trying to stay away from big crowds. Roads were easy and finding a flat area to set up camp was easy. The canyon provides nice shade if you pick a good spot! Pack in a pack out, saw a bit of trash and broken glass in our area.

Gorgeous

One of the best easy-access and beautiful spots I've ever been at. Off the main drag, paved almost the full way there, no one else around. Quite a few potholes but nothing ridiculous.

Beautiful views

Beautiful views and gorgeous sunsets from the rim of the little painted desert. Just a short way off the highway. Plenty of flat pull through sites, and although the asphalt road is at the end of its life expectancy, it is still passable by virtually any vehicle. Unfortunately, tons of trash. We picked up two garbage bags of discarded liquor bottles and fast food remains. You can hike down to the valley from a trail starting near the picnic pavilions. There are also a couple of barbecue grills but the area around the pavilions and the grills was littered with broken glass. Excellent T-Mobile coverage. Far enough from the highway that you have very little traffic noise. A couple of day users, and only a few transient campers when we were there.

Since 2002 this deactivated county park has been privately held by the Navajo tribe as grazing land (not part of the reservation). They have generously allowed free, permit less 24-hour access, in exchange for people respecting the park, and taking their trash with them. I cannot imagine a more generous offer at such a low-cost. Camping and hiking in the Navajo Nation itself requires a permit.

Overnight stay

We just put this one on our top 5 overnight stays after 40 days on the road. Easy to find and several spots to choose from. We were the only one camping. Gorgeous sunset over the canyon. We could barely hear the highway noise. We had to get out fairly early so didn’t get to check out the stairs into the canyon. Definitely worth a return trip when in the area.

Basic but also gorgeous

Soemthing to note off the top: OnX Road says this is Navajo Nation land. Then Navajo Nation requires permits for dispersement camping in their land. Not sure how this works at this site.

It’s gorgeous. There’s plenty of space. I want to post my photos but my work is all copyright protected so I will do that if I can edit this later.

Beautiful.

We were able to get here with 2WD.

Hiking trail down to the valley.

You can tent camp here. Not a lot of space.

Beautiful location !

Absolutely stunning view. I stayed on the right side maybe a quarter mile from the loop. My spot had a fun scramble down towards the bottom. Definitely use caution!!! Several of the stairs were wobbly. The sunset was perfect i’ll be coming back soon!

Remote and quiet…

Everything other reviewers say about this place is spot on. This run down defunct old county park is rough around the edges, but worth the drive off the interstate for the beauty, peace and quiet.

I’m giving it four stars simply because while its remoteness and scenery is on point, it feels a bit exposed with the highway in sight. We were the only campers there on a Sunday night, and felt a bit like sitting ducks (targets) for anyone with bad intentions driving by. Being the weary travelers we are, we our caution level remained high and on guard….just in case. It’s not a place I would recommend leaving a tent behind as a basecamp.

The highway is far enough away you can hardly hear the occasional car drive by. We didn’t have time to explore, but are super curious as to where to decrepit stairway down the bluffs lead to. The sunset was as others said it would be, with coyotes singing in the distance. Just open your doors facing west and you can sit for hours and hours taking in the wide open views.

Being so exposed high up on a flat ridge, it was a bit breezy. I can imagine it can get extremely windy and sandy during a dust storm.

We will definitely keep this spot on our list of good places to get some zzzzz’s!

Painted Desert dispersed camping near Winslow, AZ

OMG!!! THIS PLACE WAS AMAZING!!
Private, there was 1 other camper on the rim, and they were probably 1/4 mile away. The place was absolutely beautiful. No light noise to ruin the stars, just my hubby, pup and me enjoying the solitude!! We only stayed 1 night but I would definitely love to stay here again! The sunset and sunrise was magical!

The drive in doesn't seem like much and the facilities could use some love but when you look over that edge the view is absolutely amazing.

Excellent place to view and/or spend the night

I rolled up just as the sun was setting. What a spectacular view of that! There were only a couple of other vehicles here. There are some picnic tables near the entrance, but that’s about it. I didn’t see any fire-rings, just plenty of parking. The park road runs parallel with the highway, about a quarter mile from it so the road noise is minimal, but still audible. There is a repeater tower within line of sight - I’m guessing that’s why I had great cell service (T-Mobile).
