Best Campgrounds near Leupp, AZ

The Navajo Nation lands surrounding Leupp, Arizona connect to a diverse camping landscape spanning from Winslow to Flagstaff. Established campgrounds like Homolovi State Park (5 miles outside Winslow) and Meteor Crater RV Park provide developed options with hookups and amenities, while dispersed camping opportunities exist throughout Coconino National Forest. The region transitions from high desert terrain to pine forests as elevation increases toward Flagstaff, creating distinct camping environments. Many sites offer access to the Arizona Trail, with campgrounds like Pinegrove featuring trail connections directly from camp.

Road conditions vary significantly across the region, with some dispersed areas requiring high-clearance vehicles. As one camper noted at Homolovi State Park, "There's good distance between each of the RV sites but there's no shade since this is grassland." Fire restrictions are common during dry periods, particularly at lower elevations. Cell service is generally reliable near Winslow but becomes spotty in forest areas. Temperature variations can be extreme, with higher elevation sites experiencing freezing temperatures even when lower areas remain warm. The Winslow Visitor Center allows free overnight RV parking with good cell coverage, though campers mention "very noisy trains all night long."

Campground amenities range from basic to comprehensive across the region. Established sites at Homolovi State Park feature electric hookups, water, and access to ancient ruins. "We walked the mile down to the Homolovi 1 ruins and were pleasantly surprised by a small herd of donkeys that posed for pictures," reported one visitor. Dispersed camping areas like Two Guns Ghost Town and Winona offer no facilities but provide more solitude. Weekend crowding affects many sites, particularly those with OHV access. The Cinder Hills Off Highway Vehicle Area contains "tons of sites" but experiences significant noise and dust, especially on weekends. Campers consistently mention the Arizona Trail as a highlight, with multiple campgrounds providing direct access to this 800-mile route traversing the state.

    Winona Dispersed Camping

    Plenty of spots

I arrived after dark and there were several pullout spots. I chose to just park behind the trees which allowed privacy, but i could have followed the forrest road further in. There was a camper made rock fire pit. The area is packed rock and flat . I was just car camping but i feel i could have easily pulled my 24 ft rv as well and had plenty of room to turn around. I can hear distand traffic from I40 but not a single car came down this road. I would definitely come back here.

    Homolovi State Park Campground

    Great Sunsets!

The campground is going thru some renovations, like adding a new bathroom/shower facility. While here in early Sept, all they have are porta-johns and temporary showers (that do not have hot water). Each site has a covered picnic table, fire pit, and grill. Sites have water and the option for electric. Sites are paved and some have tent pads. The evening sunsets are amazing!! Not much tree cover or shade. There are wild burros roaming the park. Only about 2 miles from Winslow, which has anything you might need.

    Canyon Vista Campground

    Beautiful and spacious spots!

Super nice host, spots were well spaced. Vault toilets were well kept, I will saw that the Dyrt app has the cost as $22, but we paid $30 so the price must have increased recently. However, cost is worth it :)

    FS Road 219 Mormon Lake

Great dispersed campsite right outside of Mormon Lake Village

This is a hidden gem right as you enter Mormon Lake Village. Even though it is free dispersed with no amenities, The Mormon Lake General store is within a short walk. The store is open Wednesday through Sunday offering essentials, fuel and water. As of 9/1/25 price is 20 cents a gallon. Cash is NOT accepted so have debit or credit ready. There are about 4 large sites right at the entrance and several more smaller ones further in. Once pass the cattle guard on FS219 the road gets rough. Passable if you take it easy with most sturdy vehicles. Our Hyundai Santa Cruz made it in and out about a mile in.

The site is quiet on most days, but holidays can be pretty full and noisy.

Our site was full of trash, wweended up collecting a full contractors bag in addition to our own garage.

The town and the locals are friendly and helpful.

Keep in mind Mormon Lake Lodge closes November 1st, not sure if FS219 closes as well. There is a large barrier gate at the entrance so it is possible that the site closes as well.

Cinder Hills Off Highway Vehicle Area

ATV racing through till 2 AM

Great spot and lots of room. But some creeps were racing their ATVs till 2 AM. Not cool. Tons of campers and lots of ATVs but just a few morons ruined the night for everyone. I’m shocked there wasn’t a huge fight. Maybe there was and it wasn’t where I could see it. I expect ATVs to run all day till dark and that’s fine. People just having fun. But these creeps kept going around and around at high rates of speed until 2 AM. I would try it again because it’s a great location and lots of flat spots. I’m in a 26 ft RV

Manan Spring on Forest Road 135

Pretty quiet camping off N Lake Mary Rd

We tried finding some dispersed camping near Payson though all of the sites we visited were full. We ended up 35 miles south of Flagstaff off FS 135. After having to leave Payson we arrived very late at night. At the base of the campsite there were a lot ofvRVs set up. This was technically the FS 135 dispersed site. However we continued in for about 3 miles to the Mahan Ranch site. We got lucky and found an empty site off FS135 and FS135B. We spent a ptetty quiet week there at the base of Hutch Mountain. The next morning we found quite a bit of trash around the site. We cleaned it up and packed everything out when we headed out. There are quite a few cows in the area so watch where you step. OHV traffic wasn't too bad, much quieter than our stay at Badger Flats in Colorado. Folks were friendly and passing on the narrow roads was easy. The entire campsite was pretty quiet, a couple of generators off in the distance. Pretty much the loudest part of the stay was tge cows, lol.

Where we setup there were maybe 5 sites along the 3 mile stretch of 135B. Plenty of RV sites closer to the highway. After our week there may have been about 50 or more larger RVs setup in the msin area near Lake Mary Rd. Sedona, Flagstaff, Cottonwood were the major cities webused for water and food. Each within an hour drive. The FS roads were fairly smooth, our Hyundai Santa Cruz had no issues. But DO watch out for small stumos near the edge of the roads and for Deer and Elk. For us cell service with ATT/Cricket was NONEXISTENT. We had to get up to about mile marker 315 on Lake Mary Rd or into Mormon Lake. Service heading into Sedona and Cottonwood along Stoneman Lake Road was unavailable until we got within a mile of I17. Of course cell services was decent in Flagstaff, Sedona and Cottonwood. Spotty coming diwn 89A from Flagstaff into Oak Creek.

I gee up in the area in the 80s, much has changed, Sedona is quite a bit larger with a ton of traffuc, prices are also very high. Lunch at McDonald's ran us $35 for two people and shopping at Bashas in Sedona put a big dent in our food Budget. Water in Flag, Sedona Nd Cottonwood was around 50 cents a gallon at automated machines. We found the General Store in Mormon Lake to be the best place to refill at 20 cents a gallon. They even have laundry and bathrooms at the Lodge. No trash servuce though, they ask you to oack it out, the dumpster was reserved for the paid sites at the lodge. Though the Lake Mary recreation area about 5 miles north had a large dumpster to use.

    Meteor Crater RV Park

Nice little campground for a night or two

Just a quick overnight but we were happy to see a dog park. The benches are broke and need repairs. It would be nice to sit while the dogs run around. You can hear the freeway but that makes it easier to access. Sites were level. Not crowded. Clean and well maintained.
