Remote by Wisconsin standards, Connors Lake Campground sits within Flambeau River State Forest and draws campers willing to trade convenience for wooded sites and direct water access. The paved road in is manageable, though reviewers note it runs rough in stretches. No cell service reaches the campground, and Verizon users report zero signal. The ranger station, roughly four miles away, handles emergency calls and the single shower available to campers.
The campground has around 29 sites, a mix of electric and non-electric, spread with enough distance between them that neighbors rarely feel close. Sites closest to the water give views of Connors Lake, while others sit back in the trees. Kalene H. notes the lake is "good for fishing and boating," and muskie and bluegill are both on the catch list. Canoeists have access to 14 canoe camp areas within the broader forest, and a short trail leads to a small beach. ATV trails and hiking routes are accessible from the campground road.
Vault toilets are on-site, but maintenance is not daily. No showers and no playground. Electric hookups are available at a limited number of sites, and the campground accommodates RVs up to 35 feet. Reservations are accepted and recommended, as sites can fill on weekends. Bugs, including flies, mosquitoes, and ticks, are part of the experience in summer months. Campers who prioritize lake and river access over full amenities, and who can plan around the cell service gap, will find Lake of the Pines Campground — Flambeau River State Forest nearby if they need more non-electric options in the same forest.
Description
The Flambeau River State Forest provides excellent backcountry opportunities, including wooded hiking trails, ATV and snowmobile trails, canoeing and kayaking on the Fambeau River, traditional family campsites and rustic river sites, and hunting and fishing. Nine boat landings offer access to forest lakes and the Flambeau River. A picnic shelter at Connor's Lake is reservable. In addition to two family campgrounds in the forest, there are 14 primitive, canoe camping areas scattered along the Flambeau River which are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
