Fishing, hiking, and lake swimming anchor the activity calendar at Hills Creek State Park Campground, a Bureau of State Parks facility outside Wellsboro, Pennsylvania that draws both tent campers and RV rigs to the shores of Hills Creek Lake. The lake sits close enough to several campsites that reviewers describe waking up to water views directly behind their site. Sunrise over the lake reads well from the campground, though one reviewer notes the sun sets behind the mountain, leaving the evening side in shade earlier than expected.
Sites here run spacious by state park standards. Reviewers consistently mention room to hang a hammock between trees, and Kevin R. notes that "bathrooms are super clean," an observation that comes up across multiple visits and seasons. The campground does get crowded, particularly during summer weekends when locals and visitors alike fill the sites. Campers with dogs should note that pet-friendly sites are limited, and the RV section with full hookups tends to sit closer to the lake than the tent-only area.
Beyond the water, the park includes trails looping around the lake, a red pine plantation planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and ranger-led nature programs available at no extra charge. The swim beach has a concession stand, though it closes on Mondays. Full electric, water, and sewer hookups are available for RVs, and the price range of $24 to $134 per night reflects the variety of site types, including modern cabins and yurts with bunk beds, a cooking stove, and electricity. Wildlife is active throughout the park, and at least one reviewer flags black bears as a reason to secure coolers properly.
The campground runs from the second Friday in April through the third weekend in October, and reservations are available, which matters given how quickly sites fill in peak season. Self check-in applies for late arrivals. Day-trip range from here includes the PA Grand Canyon at Pine Creek Gorge, and the town of Wellsboro sits within easy driving distance for resupply. Campers interested in exploring campgrounds around Hills Creek State Park will find additional options in the region, including COE Hammond Lake Ives Run Recreation Area about 4.7 miles north for those wanting a different setup.
