Fox Den Campground — Deer Creek State Park

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Sitting on the south end of Deer Creek Reservoir, Fox Den Campground gives drive-in and boat-in campers direct access to the water with full hookups for RVs up to 55 feet. The sites are large, paved, and each comes with a covered picnic table and fire ring. Shade is limited here, which matters in summer when the campground fills with larger rigs and the open layout leaves little buffer between neighbors. Mid-week or shoulder-season arrivals tend to find more availability and a quieter atmosphere overall.

Water views are a consistent draw. Campers report open sightlines toward the reservoir and the mountains beyond it, and the no-wake zone along the Wallsburg arm of the lake keeps boat traffic low near the campground. The canyon road, however, runs close enough that road noise carries through day and night, so this is not a spot where the surroundings fade into the background. Bathrooms and showers are on-site, and recent visitors describe the facilities as clean and well-maintained.

Great Horned Owl Campground sits just to the northeast and offers more tree cover for campers who want shade, while Chokecherry Campground is the higher, more exposed loop closer to the road. Fox Den also has good cell service, a bike path along the Provo River within reach, and the town of Midway a short drive away. It works best for RV campers who want hookups and reservoir access and are not counting on quiet nights.

Beautiful uncrowded campground

We stopped here after leaving Salt Lake City. It is mid October so the campground is mostly empty. We were able to get our pick of sites. Beautiful views of water and the mountains. Super nice bathrooms that look brand new. Not much hiking right here but close enough to the Alpine Loop to Sundance with hiking along the way. Not far from a bike path along the Provo River. Only a few minutes into Midway with many restaurants to choose from.

Amazing views

I arrived on a Wednesday afternoon without a reservation. They had several open spots and gave me a pull through a spot with a gorgeous view of the lake in the mountains beyond it. It was quiet and the bathrooms are clean. No Wi-Fi but I had good cell service.

Quiet lake view

It was a little confusing to know exactly where the campground was located in the park. It is located on the south end of the lake. Large sites, paved, covered picnic table and fire ring.

Reservoir is great, campgrounds aren’t...

We go boating here a few times a summer, and this past summer actually camped there for the first time. The reservoir itself is fantastic, as well as the marina, but the Campground left something to be desired. We got a spot at Chokecherry Campground, which is the higher Campground (closer to the road, further from the water). There are zero trees in that campground (the lower one, Great Horned Owl, has trees). Our site, #28, had a big wide driveway, a picnic table, a shade pavilion, and hookups. We didn’t need the hookups, because we were in a Jumping Jack trailer, but those sites were the only ones left. The campground was hot and wide open, and loaded with 30+foot RVs. There were restrooms and showers, but the showers by us were out of order. If we camp there again, we’d definitely get a spot at Great Horned Owl- it’s more attractive with trees, and there are fewer RVs.

Sailboat Beach is nearby in the same marina as the campgrounds, with a little bit of an actual beach, but the better beach areas are up around by Rainbow Bay. Straight down from our campsite was the little arm of the reservoir that goes toward Wallsburg. It is a no-wake zone, so the lake was very quiet by our campsite. However, the road through the canyon is very close to the Campground and was extremely loud all day and night. You didn’t feel like you were secluded at all.
