Reservoir is great, campgrounds aren’t...

We go boating here a few times a summer, and this past summer actually camped there for the first time. The reservoir itself is fantastic, as well as the marina, but the Campground left something to be desired. We got a spot at Chokecherry Campground, which is the higher Campground (closer to the road, further from the water). There are zero trees in that campground (the lower one, Great Horned Owl, has trees). Our site, #28, had a big wide driveway, a picnic table, a shade pavilion, and hookups. We didn’t need the hookups, because we were in a Jumping Jack trailer, but those sites were the only ones left. The campground was hot and wide open, and loaded with 30+foot RVs. There were restrooms and showers, but the showers by us were out of order. If we camp there again, we’d definitely get a spot at Great Horned Owl- it’s more attractive with trees, and there are fewer RVs.

Sailboat Beach is nearby in the same marina as the campgrounds, with a little bit of an actual beach, but the better beach areas are up around by Rainbow Bay. Straight down from our campsite was the little arm of the reservoir that goes toward Wallsburg. It is a no-wake zone, so the lake was very quiet by our campsite. However, the road through the canyon is very close to the Campground and was extremely loud all day and night. You didn’t feel like you were secluded at all.
