The road getting to the camp was pretty good but can get pretty rutted up at times. The road in is also really long and narrow in some spots. Which, makes two way traffic difficult.
GuideThe Medicine Lodge Archaeological Site is maintained by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. I normally avoid campgrounds and prefer dispersed camping or backpacking, but I gladly camp here. Sites are well spaced out with Medicine Lodge Creek running through the campground. A walking/bike path goes end to end in the park following the creek. It does not have electrical hookups or dump stations for RVs. There are no shower facilities, but it does have vault toilets and drinking water. You can also buy firewood onsite as there is really nowhere to gather your own wood inside the park. You can go down the 4WD road at the north end of the park to Black Butte a bit and usually find your own firewood, however. All fires must be within the campsite fire rings.
The Medicine Lodge Archaeological Site is a perfect place to camp to explore the Bighorn Mountains, being relatively close to the Medicine Wheel and Shell Falls. If you enjoy craft beer, Tensleep Brewery -- located in a refurbished barn -- is located approximately 20 - 30 miles south in Tensleep.

TravelerWe stayed here the weekend after July 4th. Sites were all nicely mowed with very clean fire pits and new picnic tables. We had water access along the whole site. My toddler and 9 year old played in the shallows for hours. There was a deep hole next to the canyon face. In the afternoon the 60' canyon wall reflected the water. At night the fire flickered and projected our shadows across the whole face. Perfect for campfire stories. Apparently I'm not the first to think so since it has been a seasonal camp for the last 10,000 years. The petroglyphs were in remarkable shape and worth the long drive out to the campground. There are clean vault toilets in sight from every site. Highly recommend this place for a few days along the Yellowstone byways. Close access to many mountain lakes, ten sleep canyon for views and climbing, alkali rd and the dinosaur track site, cloud peak wilderness....

TravelerThis campground is an amazing off grid location for those looking to escape for a little while. The directions in the description is correct, however the GPS coordinates are not, so I will try and fix that through Dyrt. I was able to cross reference the name of the campground with USFS maps on OnX to find the actual coordinates, this led us down a nice easy dirt road that eventually lead to a pretty rough Jeep trail. You wouldn’t want anything less than a stock Wrangler or equivalent to take this road. In our rig we bottomed out a few times, and by the time we made it to the campground we weren’t sure how we would make it out if it were to snow or rain.
However, that being said, we had the whole campground to ourselves, in a beautiful creek filled with trout. A vault toilet with his and her designations was on site, and nice little hiking trails followed the river. It was a wonderful place to stay for a few days off grid.
I would totally recommend this campground for anyone who is overlanding or has a camping setup that is capable of four wheel drive. There are about 3 sites available for truck and trailer (our trailer is 12ft and is the biggest I’d ever consider bringing down this trail, I will also note it has 33” off road tires and high clearance). As well as a number of tent sites, all with either rock fire rings or metal fire rings with cooking grates.
We were able to crawl our way back out of the camp area after an overnight steady rain, we kept in in 4 low and made it safely.

TravelerThis is nothing like I thought it would be. An oasis. Nothingness and then down a dirt road and then it opens up to green grass, beautiful stream, late week spaced sites. Super well maintained. Historical sites are great and many walking paths. Several swimming holes. Shocked there were not more ppl. Highly recommend!
