The vast Colter Bay Campground at Colter Bay Village is set amidst towering lodgepole pines just a short, picturesque stroll away from Jackson Lake. The campground offers camping for tents and dry camping for RVs. (For full hookup RV sites, check out the Colter Bay RV Park.) Campsites include 338 individual campsites, 12 large group sites, 10 hiker-bicycler sites, and 13 electric-only ADA-accessible sites. Generator Loops are H, J, K M, & O. The campground is open from mid-May to late-September. As with all campgrounds in the park, the Colter Bay Campground is very popular and tends to fill up quickly. Visitors are strongly encouraged to plan and book early. 

Think of Colter Bay Village as summer camp for the entire family. This lovely area is set on the shores of Jackson Lake, and offers practical amenities like laundry facilities, showers, restaurants and a grocery store, as well as purely-for-fun diversions like a marina, gift shop, visitor center, and horse corrals. Colter Bay has an activity for everyone in the family. Visitors can enjoy hiking, kayaking and canoeing, horseback riding, fishing, swimming and beach-going, lake cruises, and ranger-led programs. Set against the majestic backdrop of the Teton Mountains, Colter Bay Village is a must-visit. 

Colter Bay Campground offers camping for tents and dry camping for RVs. (For full hookup RV sites, check out the Colter Bay RV Park.) Each tent site has a gravel parking space for up to two vehicles and space for one tent. For parties with extra-large tents or multiple tents, please see individual site specifications before booking. Multiple tents are only permitted in sites designated for multiple tents. 

Each RV site has a back-in or pull-through gravel parking space for one RV . RV sites are of various sizes, and guests should look at individual site specifications prior to booking to ensure max length availability. When factoring site length, tow vehicles should be included in total length. The maximum length permitted is 45 feet. There is a complimentary RV dump station and potable water filling station available to guests, and propane is available for purchase at the nearby RV Park. Please note, generators are only permitted in loops H, J, K, M, O, and Group Sites between the hours of 6am and 10pm. 

All sites include a picnic table, a fire pit with metal fire grate, bear-proof food storage lockers, and access to nearby water spigots, flush toilets, and laundry and showers available for an additional fee.

ADA Access: There are 13 ADA-compliant campsites with electric-only hook-ups, accessible picnic tables, and paved sites. The campground loop roads are paved and mostly level, with some sloping incline and decline. Restroom facilities are partially accessible, with accessible showers available at the launderette. Routes to the amphitheater are paved but on a sloping incline/decline. 

Complimentary WiFi/internet service is available at the restaurants, activities desk, launderette, and stores. Cellular coverage varies, and may be available depending location within the campground and service provider. A courtesy phone is located at the Campground Kiosk near the campground entrance. Firewood, food, ice, camping supplies and more can be purchased at the grocery store and adjacent gift shop.

The Best Camping Near Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Colter Bay is great for any type of camper. Walk in sites available on a first come first serve basis but the campground has many sites available. Some of the sites are located on the waterfront which makes for a great view but the water is a short walk away for the other campers. Certain sites also offer great views of the peaks across the water. We used a tent for camping which was around $30 per night. Restrooms and showers are also located nearby.

Well maintained campground

Colter Bay was a gem to stay in. I stayed in a few different loops during my time there and had a great time at all of them.  All of the spots were level and close to bathrooms (super clean and had dishwashing stations which was a huge plus).  It was easy to pack up in the morning and head out on hikes early in the morning which was amazing.  Some of the sites are close to each other and can be annoying if you have noisy neighbors but overall was a great choice for spending my time in the Tetons.

I was like one of a few tent campers in the section of the campground apparently they have a separate just tent only section if you want but I opted for this section as it had it was closer to the lake but it was a generator  section and things like that it's kind of noisy because you have a ton of RVs and just a warning it's super super busy there are other surrounding campgrounds other than this 1 that I would have opted for how I known but this is a decent it's got showers but it is just hella busy so if you're not into that scene try to find one that surrounds colter Bay campground

Close to the lake 

We booked two nights in the O Loop (346). Prior to booking the site looked level. Our site was so slopped I could barely get the stability bars off the trailer. We used our spare tire as a step. When we extended our slide our we were 8 or 9 inches from the roadway. If you have a camper I would book a power site, which are level.

Beware of the pull through sites

Trying to reserve a site during the first summer following COVID lockdown was tricky and required us to stay in multiple standard non-electric sites over the course of five days.  While our trailer arrangement didn’t require electricity and water, in hindsight it would have been worth trying to stay in the separate full hookup section of the campground.

The sites are mostly pull through which is fine as long as your site is on the passenger right (passenger) side of the one-way road.  Otherwise, your living quarters side will be facing the road instead of the inner campsite.  Due to emergency evacuation policy, camp staff/rangers prohibit you from parking your rig against the flow of traffic.  

The bathrooms are dated but typical of a big national park. Showers are not provided at the bathhouse; you have to pay for them at the central Colter Bay visitor center/store. 

Sites (the pull through) are mostly level, but not true for tent pads within the interior of the sites.  A lot of the sites in loop A seemed to have suffered moderate erosion resulting in exposed roots.  

Cell service is essentially non-existent and only available at the visitor center.  

Strict on checkout times, but that’s understandable with the number of people trying to get into the park.  

CG is centrally located to make for a relatively easy travel time to Jenny Lake or north to Yellowstone.  

Not bad for a National Park CG

This review is for the basic campground at colter bay in grand Tetons. Not the RV park which is very dense parking RV to RV. Not the cabins. Just a plain national park campground. 
Each site has tent pad, table, and fire ring. Flush toilets and sinks in building within each campground loop. Water spigot near rest room. Depending on site, it may be 500 feet to restrooms (like site C60). 
Sites are well screened from adjacent sites with dense trees and bushes. Star watching is limited due to trees. 
Every site was full mid week mid September. Very friendly campers from all across US, Canada, and Europe. 
It is a bear area black and grizzly. Bear spray recommended on hikes. 
Great wildlife viewing on local trails, or near Jackson lake dam and various sites around the park. Moose, bears, elk, beavers, raptors,…
Easy to spend 3-4 days enjoying the park and viewing wildlife
Note this site turns into a big puddle after a solid day of rain. Tent pad raised with gravel and logs was above water. Many sites likely have similar issue. But not all. Very limited T-Mobile if any. 

Dense trees friendly campers

Campers have minimal amenities in the sites, but the campground has a store, laundry, showers, and just about 
anything you need. 

Rugged and beautiful

We left the national park and we loved the location of Colter Bay Village. However, I was not a fan of the Campground each campsite was “pull through“ but it was right on the road with no space in between the site and the road. The little Grove that accompanied each campsite was wonderful however it was extremely unlevel so if you need to cook on a level surface, you had a real issue doing that we also had to level one side of our camper at least 4 Inches. A big plus was you could walk from our campsite directly to the lake and the lake is just amazing with a beautiful rock beach.  I would come back to this area again, but I would probably just stay in the RV park. This park had a ton of wildlife and the hikes were other worldly. Just stunning.

Definitely be ready to hear your neighbors but a great spot to be close to the lake!

Pretty crowded but right by the lake!

We came to use the dump station after boondocking in the area. It is $10 to dump. When you arrive in colter bay turn right at the four way stop and then take an immediate left into the Rv Park. The office is on your left where you pay and you can also pay to fill propane. Make the loop through the park to turn around and turn left out of the RV park to go to the campground where the dump is. There is also potable water on the main road of the campground.
