Schools of trout happily swim through the lazy Whitewater River and various spring fed creeks of Whitewater State Park. And while it’s known for its fantastic fishing opportunities, the park also boasts year-round interpretive programs, a modern Visitor Center, and an especially appreciated lack of mosquitos, unique for the region. Whitewater is well seasoned, with a number of historical attractions within and nearby. In fact, 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the park. To commemorate the occasion, local conservationists and naturalists have teamed up to release a special Oral History Project from stories of campers and those native to the region. Explorers and adventurers will love this park’s diverse selection of attractions and oddities. Home of the park office and interpretive services, the Whitewater Valley Visitor Center should be your first stop. The friendly Park staff are ready to help you plan your visit and load you up on information, and even loaner equipment such as GPS units, fishing kits, discovery kits for kids, and birding kits. Don’t skip the Discovery Room, which showcases nature displays, exhibits and a spotting area to observe the local bluebirds, cardinals, hawks and bald eagles flying about. The vast expanse of outdoor wilderness is really what you’ll want to check out. If you only have time for a quick visit, check out the Chimney Rock Trail for an awesome view of the Whitewater River. Those searching for a more accessible hike can take the Meadow Trail, which drops off right into a grassy valley, surrounded by dramatic Minnesota bluffs. During the hot and humid summers, go unwind at the beach for a refreshing dip in the cold, spring-fed water. Those more interested in history lovers should visit the famous Elba Fire Tower. Built in 1933, this sturdy tower offers cozy 360 degree views of the entire wetland region below. You’ll be especially grateful for the chance to unwind, thanks to the arduous 500-step climb required to ascend to the top. Finally, firmly planted atop the land sits Inspiration Point; a beautiful limestone rock outcrop that overlooks the entirety of the Whitewater valley. Known as the most popular attraction within Whitewater State Park, visitors can still discover solace from their troubles. In fact, this is the only overlook in the entire park where there are no signs of civilization anywhere in sight. With just a little imagination, standing atop Inspiration Point on a clear, calm day can make you feel as if you could step down into a deep forested paradise, unspoiled and far from the reach of society. Whitewater campground here is plentiful, with every site having full electric hookups and full-through capabilities. The campground features a full range of amenities including regularly placed shower houses with laundry facilities, and a number of group camping areas as well. Furthermore, there are 5 cabins available with various sleeping capabilities.

Aefintyr campground is located in the scenic woods of the Whitewater River Valley in the Driftless Area of Southeastern Minnesota. We offer beautiful blufftop hike-in camping and glamping and cozy treehouse inspired camper cabins. The hike-in camp/glamp sites offer a backpacking like experience (1460 ft hike with a 230 ft elevation gain) and are great for people who like to get some exercise and want to immerse themselves in a woodland setting. Perfect relaxation destination or home base for your Whitewater Valley adventures. Aefintyr is a small operation that values peace, quiet and quality over quantity. Get away from crowds and get into the woods! Onsite, enjoy a campfire, stargazing, hiking and observing the amazing animals, plants and fungi.

    Nearby recreation opportunities include:

Within 2 miles of Whitewater State Park, the Elba Fire Tower, Whitewater State Wildlife Management Area (hunting, trout fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing) and the Whitewater River State Water Trail (canoe/kayak/tube). There is a gas station (bait and fishing supplies, convenience store items), 2 bars and a restaurant within a mile in the town of Elba. Whitewater Wines Winery is also just a few miles up the road!

    Shared amenities:

Bathhouse with individual rooms, with a hot shower, vanity and composting toilet

Outhouse with composting toilet on top of the bluff within 400 feet of each campsite

Community area (requires short hike) with tent shelters (2, each 10' x 20'), outdoor furniture, tables, chairs, propane grill w/ side burner, firepit w/ cooking grate/skillet.

Propane Gas Grill (at base of the hill by the bathhouse)

    Stargazing area with reclining chairs

Cell service: AT&T typically works well, Verizon works intermittently, and T-mobile doesn't have a good signal.

Wi-fi: Available at the bathhouse and parking area, data speeds up to 25 Mbps.

**Parking: **On site, 2 vehicle limit, no vehicles larger than a full-size truck, no trailers.

**Host accessibility: **Available 24/7/365 via phone and email/messaging, frequently on site.

**Security: **Campground community areas are under video surveillance.

Setting: Aefintyr campground is located in the hilly, wooded, blufflands of the Whitewater River Valley just north of the tiny town of Elba, MN. Views are primarily of the woods and valleys. The campground is off of a 2 lane county highway so there is some intermittent road noise. It is otherwise very peaceful and filled with the sounds of nature, including lots of birds and other wildlife.

Aefintyr is a peaceful place with chill vibes and we like to keep it that way! It is not a place for parties or rowdy groups. We like to listen to nature, not loud music or rowdy people blabbering into the night. Please see our rules/polices to know what to expect.

      Beautiful & peaceful

Very nice QUIET park! RV Campsites are gravel with fire ring and picnic table. The sites are fairly level. There is also a cabin to rent. Many electric sites.

Very nice hiking trails, make sure to check the map to plan easy hike up and steep hike downhill! Beautiful vistas on the Switchback trail.

The Mossy Seep trail has interesting plants and unique growth.

Big Spring Trail boarders the campground, easy walk to see the Spring. Tried to dip feet in the water but couldn’t leave them in the COLD water for long! Water is crystal clear and flowing fast.

Bathroom (men’s) if functional, has running water at the sinks and showers work well.

NO PHONE SERVICE which we appreciated.

The Restaurant “Good Times” is 4 miles away and has good food and service. Also a grocery store in town in case you need more supplies.

Leaves are just starting to change in September.

      Horrible service

My husband made a reservation for our 25th wedding anniversary and he was rushed in the hospital for an emergency surgery. We notified you 3 days in advance and you refused to give us even a partial refund! We only had that money to celebrate. You didn't even offer another date for us! We are now not able to enjoy our 25th! That's terrible that you will do nothing in such an emergency situation. I will be making this public in every venue I can. Disgusting that you will probably get paid by another person to stay there. How disappointing that you would offer us nothing! Very bad business.

Good campground, rude and unprofessional management

If you want to experience very rude and unfair treatment where you will be mistreated and ripped off by the staff and ow era you must come to Eagle Cliff campground. Was double charged for the room without any options and negotiations and knees delivered to us after we already left the campground. Staff is very rude and unwilling to be reasonable, professional and understanding. Campground looks good but rules are ridiculous and staff and owners are very shady and make non sense decisions. Stay away if you want nice peaceful stay and don’t want to be ripped off.

      Gem!

This park had lots of old tree coverage. The site we had was secluded enough from others. But they had sites available that were open to each other good for groups. They say on the description which are linked together. Nice clean facilities. Saw they had an outdoor theater which we didn’t see in action because we weren’t there tell almost 10pm and someone was still in the office. Nice grass trails. Looked like a decent playground.

      Aefintyr

Aefintyr is a gem in the Whitewater area!

      Aefintyr has it all!

A beautiful cabin, hike-in glamping or bring your own gear.

I was able to stay in the cabin for a couple nights with two friends. The cabin was cozy even during winter. The space was perfect for us.

I also brought my own gear and camped up on the bluff. It was so fun to socialize in the shared space around the fire and play games.

If you are up in the bluff, be sure to wear good shoes for the hike up.

I love that each site has it's own fire pit with fire wood.

The Whitewater area is so beautiful, I enjoy hiking in the area.

      Looking forward to going back!

Beautiful full service campground on the Root River

Great spot in the Root River Valley. They offer lots of extras including tube rental and transport, bike rentals, bingo and live music. Our site was right long the river where we saw turtles, bald eagles and lots of other wildlife.  Facilities were clean and well-maintained. Not a lot of trees between sites but still far enough apart for privacy.

Beautiful campsite with a lot of amenities.

Its nice to have a place this nice only 35 minutes from Rochester. Beautiful campground with great amenities available. The hike to the site is steep but worth it once you get up there. I stayed at the Talia bell tent site so I didn't have to bring much so it made the hike a lot easier. Short drive to White Water State Park. A lot of great trout fishing spots along the river. Very peaceful campground, great view of the stars on clear nights! Will definitely be back.

      The grass is greener

This huge campground had the best lush looking grass I ever saw. There is every kind of camping to be found here, including seasonal camping. Close to Lanesboro. If I needed bathroom or showers, I would have been disappointed at the port a pots and showers far away from my site.

Beautiful Campground & Park & Zoo!

The campground Host Sherry and John are great!

The campground is well maintained and right by the river. Nice RV spots and nice tent spots along the river. #10 is nice tent spot we like. #20 is good RV spot we use. There is Firewood in a shed for sale.

No cell service but able to text.

Nice clean bathrooms! Great shower heads in men’s bathroom.

Trails are super nice and well maintained, many different levels of hikes going along the River to hikes up on the prairie tops. Some nice overlooks.

Zoo and nature center are great. Animals are all rescued and given a home. Bison herd and elk and deer too.

We will be camping there again!

Beautiful campground tucked in between 2 bluffs.

Long narrow campground in between 2 bluffs in MN driftless area. Sites are not too close but it was early in the season so there wasn't much brush to separate the sites yet. Beaver Creek runs right alongside the campsites and can be heard.  There is a nice grassy easy hiking trail along the creek (Big Spring Trail). The Hole-in-the-Rock trail is steep and rocky but has beautiful views and rock formations.

There is no cell phone service.

      Hidden Gem

Really enjoyed this park. This one seems to fly a little under the radar as we were able to book 2 sites next to each other for the weekend only a few days prior to our stay. Site 39 was honestly massive and secluded so we didn’t even end up using our other site. 39 fit a 4 person and 6 person tent with more space to potentially put another 4 person and still have breathing room. Campground has a long and narrow layout with the one shower/non-primitive bathroom at the very front of the park. We stayed in site 39 and 40 which is at the very far end of the campground so we had to hop in the car to shower as it was over a half mile trek. Definitely do some research before booking because I did notice some extremely small sites that had zero privacy. Hiking trails were great with a variety of terrain options. The Hole-in-rock trail had some seriously technical potions but was very fun to climb.

      Very nice, but small park

This hidden gem is a great small park and campground perfect for a weekend getaway. The electric sites are on the smaller side (our site, #7, required us to park our truck lengthwise in front of our 29’ trailer) but are fairly secluded from each other. The bathroom/shower building was strange - vault toilets on one side with the showers on the other. Not sure how the women’s was, but hubby said one of the men’s had no hot water, and the other was almost scalding hot. A bit of a tight turn to get to the dump station. Good trails throughout the park, most with climbs up to the tops of the ridge. No phone service at all throughout the park. Need to come back when the fall colors are at their peak!

      Cedar Hill

We camped at Whitewater State Park August 14-17, 2022, in drive-in campsite #53 of the Cedar Hill campground. The campsite was great! We were surrounded by mature trees, shrubs, and wildflowers on three sides. We could hear the flow of the river as it tumbled along its course behind the campsite. It was very peaceful.

Lots of birds, butterflies, and squirrels visited our campsite daily. We heard raccoons at night but never saw them. There were no mosquitos and very few other flying insects.

It was a long walk from our site to the new restroom/shower building. There was water and a vault toilet closer, about four campsites away.

The park has many hiking trails of varying degrees of difficulty. We hiked to Chimney Rock and Inspiration Point and found the trails more challenging than we expected from their descriptions.

We greatly enjoyed our time at Whitewater and plan to return.

      My favorite hidden valley forest!

Took a chance booking online on 4th of July weekend at a place we’d never even heard of and boy was it a great decision! We strongly value our privacy so we chose a cart in site all the way in the back (second to last as 48 was booked) even with campers on either side of us, we had plenty of coverage from the wooded area between the sites!! Great hiking for beginners and experts alike with some gorgeous views! We will definitely be coming back!

      Perfect weekend

We are new to tent camping and are fortunate to live a short drive away from Whitewater State Park. We have heard from our friends who go camping that this is a highly sought after destination and I can see why. Beautiful lookouts on trails, quiet camp sites (non electric sites are much more peaceful), and very nice amenities. The main shower/restroom area looks brand new and is very nice.
