Dense forest surrounds the 17 sites and 10 cabins at this small resort just outside Mount Rainier National Park's Nisqually entrance. Thick tree cover separates each camping spot, requiring careful maneuvering to back RVs into position. The single primitive tent site sits furthest from the main area, offering the most seclusion with its own water pump nearby.

A single restroom and shower building serves all campers, though Celina M. found them "quite nice, actually—the cleanest we've come upon so far." One coin-operated washer and dryer handles laundry needs at $5 per load. WiFi typically works well except during peak usage times, while cell service proves spotty for most carriers. The resort sells firewood when burn bans allow, plus ice for campers.

Weekend traffic to Mount Rainier can create substantial backups past the campground, with some visitors reporting two-mile waits on busy Sundays. Weekdays see far less congestion. No provisions are available on-site beyond firewood and ice. Campers exploring the area should consider places to camp near Ashford for additional options when planning extended stays in the region.

The location works well for Mount Rainier visitors who prefer established amenities over dispersed camping, particularly those needing full hookups for larger RVs up to 50 feet.

Directions from Seattle/Tacoma: Take I-5 south to exit # 127/Hwy # 512. Take the 2nd exit off # 512 (Mt.Rainier/ Pacific Ave./Pacific University). Right (south) onto Hwy # 7 (Pacific Ave). Drive about 35 miles, to the town of Elbe. At Elbe veer left onto State Route # 706. Follow the signs to Mt. Rainier National Park (about 12 3/4 miles) Mounthaven will be on the right.

Many campers appreciated the exceptionally clean facilities, peaceful wooded setting, and caring owners near Mt Rainier's entrance. Several guests observed maneuvering challenges for RVs and limited on-site provisions requiring advance planning.

Nice 3 night stay

This is a great small campground for exploringMt Rainier. We stayed here with friends from Colorado and explored the park and did some great hiking outside of the park. It’s a small mostly quiet campground with around 17 sites and 10 cabins. I would stay again if going to explore the mountain. Very clean showers and restroom building. There is ice available for purchase and firewood if no burn ban. Very enjoyable stay.

Like a warm blanket

First, DO NOT GO PAST THE SIGN where it tells you to stop. If you turn right to the office you will need to back out. We did. The trees are so thick and the spots are separated. It’s wonderful. You have to maneuver your trailer into the spots. The bathhouse is fine with two small “bathrooms”. There is one washer and one dryer at $5 per load. Ouch. There is no real store nearby so have what you need before you get here. WIFI works well; cell service not so much (Verizon). It is beautiful in the woods.

Great clean bathrooms!

Peaceful, pretty, private, with beautifully clean cedar bathroom/showers and thoughtful touches, like a box of tissues in the laundry and nice-smelling lavender hand soaps provided. We had a lovely start to our volcano-climbing honeymoon here.

Knocking on the gates of Rainier

There is no mistaking why the village perched on the slopes of Mt Rainier is called Paradise. Rainier is spectacular! And Mounthaven is so close to the Rainier gate that visitors could stroll over to show their passes or pay those entry fees. Note that the gates are still a distance from Longmire or Paradise. The resort is so close in fact, that upon arriving around 4pm on a Sunday, we waited in a long line of traffic backed up 2 miles past the gate and 1 1/2 past the resort. We were told this only happens on busier weekends, and it certainly held true for our weekdays camping here. Just be aware if time is an issue so plans can be made accordingly.

We are traveling the Northwest this summer with camp packed in the back of our car, and as such we occupied their only primitive, tent site. The site itself was the most out of the way, quiet, and secluded that we have camped in all summer. It has a water pump onsite, which is quite handy. There is a dumpster close enough to not be a chore. The bathrooms/shower/laundry and pretty close too.

The resort has several hook up sites for RV’s or tents—I don’t believe any were pull-through, but call to confirm. The amenity sites weren’t as private, but they seemed reasonable. The resort prides itself in cabins, and from all accounts they appear to be stocked with all necessities like linens, very nice, well maintained and downright cute.

Firewood is sold onsite, but no other provisions are available at the resort. There is a super extra pricey Grocery-Mart closer to Rainier, and two fairly pricey, better stocked options 5 miles in the other direction. They sell gas there too. Visitors would be wise to come to the area with groceries in their trunk regardless.

The resort has one toilet and one shower. They are quite nice, actually—the cleanest we’ve come upon so far. We were concerned about the number, but overall we didn’t spend a lot of time waiting, if we waited at all.

There is also one coin operated washer and dryer. WiFi is usually good, but no so much at peak times.

The owners James and Zandy were really friendly, and seemed to deeply care about their property as well as their clients.
