McMillan — Ross Lake National Recreation Area

McMillan is a boat-in only backcountry campsite located on Ross Lake in North Cascades National Recreation Area. There is no road access to this campground. You'll need to either kayak or canoe to reach it. The campsite serves as a good first-night stop for multi-day paddling trips on Ross Lake. Plan your route carefully and be prepared for changing weather conditions on the water.

McMillan Campground offers basic backcountry amenities. As a boat-in campsite, facilities are minimal but functional for wilderness camping. The site likely includes a primitive toilet, fire rings, and possibly picnic tables. There is no potable water available, so campers must bring their own water or filter from the lake. No garbage service is provided, so be prepared to pack out all trash. The campsite maintains a natural setting with limited development.

The prime camping season at McMillan Campground runs from May 15th through September 30th, which is when the reservation system is active through North Cascades National Park. Summer months (July-August) typically offer the most reliable weather with warmer temperatures and calmer water conditions, ideal for paddling. Early September provides a good balance of pleasant temperatures with fewer visitors. Note that reservations are required during the main season and should be made through the National Park Service reservation system.

Ross Lake offers excellent kayaking and canoeing opportunities, making it perfect for water-based exploration from McMillan Campground. Fishing is popular in the lake's clear waters. Hiking options may be available near the shoreline, though most extensive trails would require boat travel to other access points. Wildlife viewing is rewarding, with possibilities to spot eagles, deer, and other North Cascades wildlife. Photography enthusiasts will appreciate the stunning mountain views reflecting on the lake, especially during sunrise and sunset.
