A Northwest Forest Pass is required to camp here. The road itself is dirt and gravel, narrow in places, and can get muddy enough that reviewers recommend AWD or 4WD for the lower sites closest to the river. Low-clearance vehicles have scraped bottom on the dip down to the riverbank sites, so that approach is worth scouting on foot first.
The camping area spreads across several distinct pockets along 2918. Sites near the river sit roughly a quarter mile off the paved road, far enough that highway noise drops away, replaced by the sound of moving water. Isabelle B. describes it as "super beautiful mossy green scenery right next to the river," which captures the dense, wet-forest character of the place. Fire rings mark established spots, and tree canopy provides reasonable rain cover, though wet-weather camping here is common. A black bear was spotted near the river by at least one group, so food storage matters.
Campsite count is loosely estimated at eight to ten spots across the corridor, with some walk-in only and others accessible by vehicle. The South Fork Sol Duc Road (FS 2918) Dispersed area and Forest Road 2918 Dispersed Site are nearby alternatives along the same general route. Reviewers with travel trailers up to 23 feet have found workable spots past the bridge on the right fork, though the road gets rougher higher up the mountain.
Cell coverage depends on carrier. Verizon users report one to two bars of 4G, while T-Mobile has pulled 5G in the area. AT&T has come up unreliable across multiple reviews. Noise from ATVs and what sounded like a shooting range was noted on at least one visit, so it is not always as quiet as the forest setting might suggest. Trash left by previous campers has been a recurring complaint, and multiple reviewers ask that everyone pack out what they bring in.
This site works best for campers comfortable with undesignated camping, variable road conditions, and a self-sufficient setup, particularly those using the area as a base for day trips to Sol Duc Falls or the Hoh Rainforest.
