American Sunset RV & Tent Resort

Razor clam diggers and coastal anglers use American Sunset RV & Tent Resort as their base for Westport area fishing and beach activities. This private campground operates year-round on open terrain with full hookups for RVs and space for tent camping.

The campground divides into sections for long-term and short-term campers, with sites spaced closely together. During busy clam digging seasons, neighboring RVs park within five feet of each other, leaving just enough room for slide-outs and picnic tables. Some sites offer vegetation barriers that provide visual separation between camping spots. An open field borders part of the property, and a bike trail runs along the road behind certain sites.

Amenities include a covered fish cleaning station that works well for processing clams and catch. The facility provides restrooms, showers, and WiFi along with full RV hookups. "At night you can hear loud cars on the nearby highway," notes Nelle H., and early morning crow activity starts around 4 AM. The campground stays relatively quiet during off-peak periods but fills up when razor clam seasons open.

For additional coastal camping, Westport Recreation Park sits just north of the resort. Book ahead during clam digging weekends when sites fill quickly.

A campground with mixed reviews featuring tight site spacing and noise concerns from traffic and neighbors. Some guests appreciated clean, large sites and helpful staff, though experiences varied significantly.

Not busy during fall

Our friends have stayed here a few times for razor clam digging and seemed fine with it, so we tried it. We stayed 2 nights during a mid-November clam dig. There is a string of long-term campers and a string of short-term spots. It was really empty, so there were no close neighbors. I could see how it would be overly snug during a busy session with how close the sites are together. You literally have enough room for a slide out and 5 feet or so to the next site's picnic table. The covered fish cleaning station was very nice to clean clams. It's an older looking campground but we were happy with it.

Great tent sites

I went two separate times during June. Both sites I picked were very clean, large, and weren't too close to the next site. Site 48 had plenty of vegetation between the sites to provide some sense of privacy. Dog loved being near the open field. Bonus: there's a bike trail along the road behind site 48 (sign is a littlehidden in the brush). Didn't have my bike at the time to try it out but will try it the next time I head down there. Staff was friendly and helpful. Driving through it does look like rvs are parked a little close. I either camp in my minivan or a tent so didn't experience the rv sites.

Very expensive for being so close together

The sites are extremely close together and the staff is not friendly. Trailer sites will say "fits up to 40ft trailer.. etc" but that is including your truck so be careful. Sites are 58 per night plus an extra 2 per night if you don't want them to change your site at their discretion.

Very loud

Our site was right next to the porta potty and really smelled. It was very loud. Lots of campers with crying babies and barking dogs. We stayed because it had a pool that ended up being closed. At night you can hear loud cars on the nearby highway. At 4 am the crows start cawing.
