Big Deer State Park Campground sits within Groton State Forest, one of Vermont's largest contiguous blocks of public land, where multiple state parks cluster around a network of ponds and lakes. The campground is small, and check-in happens up the road at Stillwater State Park Campground, which functions as the administrative hub for both sites. Sites include a mix of standard tent and RV spots along with lean-to shelters, and full hookups with electric, water, and sewer are available for RVs up to 32 feet. Access via Boulder Beach Road is a straightforward dirt road drive.
Site spacing draws consistent comment from reviewers. Several note that vegetation between sites provides some visual separation, but sound carries easily, and neighbors are close enough to overhear conversations. The Moose lean-to, for instance, faces an adjacent site roughly 15 feet away rather than the woods, which is less common at other state park lean-tos in the area. Campers who have also stayed at Ricker Pond State Park Campground or New Discovery State Park Campground tend to rank those higher for privacy and waterfront access.
What the campground does have going for it is trail access. A trailhead within the park connects to Big and Little Deer Mountains, the Groton Nature Center, and Boulder Beach, with a separate equestrian trail leading toward New Discovery. Cell coverage is limited, with one reviewer reporting a single bar of AT&T service. Bathrooms are functional but basic. Since this campground fills as a last-minute option when surrounding parks book up, reserving early improves the odds of getting a site with better orientation.
