Accessible via a forest road that closes seasonally, Haystack Road provides 11 numbered dispersed sites within White Mountain National Forest. The road typically opens in mid-June after drying out from winter conditions and closes again in autumn, with current status updates available through the Forest Service. Each wooded site accommodates up to three vehicles and 15 people for stays up to 14 days at no charge.
The forest road ends at Little River, where campers can fish or swim. Greg L. notes that "the first few sites on the left have a small stream behind them" for water access. Site #1 sits closest to the main highway on paved surface, while the remaining sites extend deeper into the woods with more separation. The parking area at road's end serves as the North Twin Trailhead, connecting to Twin Mountain peaks and the Pemigewasset Wilderness.
Bear and moose frequent the area, particularly at night. Cell service reaches most sites, though coverage drops significantly on hiking trails. Mid-week arrivals improve chances of securing preferred spots during busy periods. Campers should secure sites with gear when hiking, as competition for spots can be intense during peak season. For additional camping options, explore campgrounds around Twin Mountain or check nearby Beech Hill Campground for developed amenities.
