Fishing, swimming, and waterside camping draw visitors to Lake Holbrook Park - South, a county-managed site on the eastern shore of Lake Holbrook outside Mineola. Sites sit within roughly 15 feet of the water's edge, making this one of the more water-accessible free campgrounds in the area. The access road has some dips and low spots, so drivers with larger rigs should slow down on the way in. Navigation matters here: the directions default to the beach area, but camp spots are forward and to the right upon entry.
Sites are large enough to drive directly into and spaced well apart. Crowd levels tend to stay low, with multiple visitors reporting being the only camper on site during off-peak months. There is some ambient light from nearby buildings and occasional train and traffic noise, so this is not a fully remote experience. Cell service is available. Campfires are permitted, pets are welcome, and picnic tables are on-site. The campground is ADA accessible and listed as big rig friendly, though the road conditions warrant caution.
Trash management is a known issue. Trash cans are inverted and bolted to posts, leaving litter scattered along the shore, roadways, and in the lake. Tom B. stayed 12 days and called it "a free, relaxing place to camp, no hassles," with Mineola's Walmart a short drive away for resupply. Campers wanting a more developed setup nearby can look at Mineola Civic Center and RV Park or Lake Holbrook Park - West, which sits about a mile to the northwest.
