New Canyon Campground

Rock climbing enthusiasts will find New Canyon Campground positioned within the Cibola National Forest and Grasslands, where the rocky terrain provides natural climbing opportunities. This USDA Forest Service campground sits in a valley setting accessed by what one camper describes as the "most beautiful drive into the campsite." The facility operates as a free camping area with ten tent-only sites and no RV accommodations.

The campground features concrete picnic tables and bear containers at select sites, though these require walking up stairs and walkways to reach. Vault toilets serve the area and receive positive marks for cleanliness from visitors. Wildlife activity includes bears and wild boar that move through the canyon, with recent sightings reported within 700 yards of the camping area. The low vegetation provides limited privacy between sites but allows for open views across the landscape.

Access involves driving an additional five miles up to reach higher elevations where deer and other wildlife congregate. The rocky environment attracts climbers, while hiking trails extend throughout the surrounding forest. Campers exploring camping destinations outside Cibola National Forest and Grasslands will find this location sees relatively light use compared to more developed facilities. Note that pets are not permitted at this campground, making it suitable for campers comfortable with basic amenities and wildlife encounters in a canyon setting.

Nice place!

Overall a nice place to camp. Most beautiful drive into the campsite. Some of the campsites had concrete picnic tables and bear containers. They were up a walkway and some stairs though. The vault toilets were clean. We were approached by a guy letting us know there was a boar and a bear coming down the canyon. He said they were about 700 yards away.

Desert camping

This place offers a beauty of its own kind it is not like timber forest that I am used to camping in (I'm from the north west with huge trees) however there were beautiful sunsets every night, the low vegetation sort of takes away from privacy, but it seemed like it was not too busy when we went. Definitely offers a beauty in its own way, I will probably be back
