Madera Canyon Roadside Park Dispersed

This area is not super close to anything really. It’s a 33 min drive to the nearest town and we learned last night that most of the town is closed down by 9pm lol. The campsite was super comfortable, it felt very safe. This little area is a nice little cold spot in a desert climate, it was 77° when we got there before sundown while it was still 100° in surrounding areas. There’s trash, picnic tables, and grills which is really nice! Being so close to route 118 was fine, not too much traffic, I was able to run on there in the morning:)

Free camping at this picnic area! First come, first serve. We had a spacious and quiet site with great views. Every space was taken on this Saturday evening by 6 PM. No facilities.

Not really a campground, but over-nighting is permitted.  No water or toilets, but trash barrels are available.  Just off a blacktop road (very little traffic), park area is all paved.  Beautiful area in the Davis mountains.  I stayed 4 days. Most of the time I was the only one here.

Trailhead parking and picnic area that explicitly allows overnight parking for free. We parked in the trailhead parking during the day and moved to a picnic area at night. There was only one other overnighter there. The picnic sites all have concrete pads with picnic tables, charcoal grills and trash cans. Each site is large and well separated from other sites and the area is flat and very accessible even to large RVs. There is no cell phone coverage. There is no water, electric, or restroom facility.

The Madera canyon Trail is an amazing 2 and 1/2 Mile loop through a Sky Island in the Davis mountains. Moderate difficulty due to loose stones, uneven surfaces, and some moderate climbing, through varied terrain. We saw numerous deer and some wild turkey on the drive to the canyon. Many hikers and day use picnickers the Saturday after Christmas.

Scary quiet, very little traffic. Beautiful night sky. Short hiking trail at the entrance. No service for 15 miles or so each way.

Nearest place to get signal on my phone was at least 15 miles away. That in itself is no problem as this is what I would expect for this location. Only two more campers were in the area. Saw a javelina on the way in and a bighorn sheep on the way out. The site I picked had an enormous picnic table (20 people at least).

Wal traveling from Big Bend NP to El Paso and thus wa sthe perfect place to stop for the night.

This is a spectacular location for star gazing. It's also close to the McDonald Observatory. This is an important historical site and I would strongly recommend getting a tour.

The campsite was very quiet and privacy is better than anything else in West Texas. Great hiking trail. The only downsides are the wind.

super quiet. right off the highway, but very little traffic. pretty level spots. i take my converted cargo trailer often.  the hike is an easy one with small children and gives visitors a taste of the actual landscape of Jeff Davis mountains, TX

Awesome free camping. No cell service.
